The University of Bolton campus really is at the heart of things. The town centre is easy to reach on foot, and we’re only a few minutes’ walks from the main rail and coach stations. We’re also less than a 20-minute train journey from Manchester, the biggest city in the north of England and home to international arts and sporting events.

Community Bolton

Bolton is one of the UK’s friendliest towns with lots to offer, from history and heritage to countryside and culture. Home to art galleries, cinemas, music and sports venues, the nationally acclaimed Octagon Theatre (renowned as one of the best provincial theatres in England) and museums including Bolton Museum, which has the finest collection of Egyptian artefacts on this side of London. With an award-winning local produce market and the North West’s biggest food and drink festival, you won’t go hungry, and you can shop (and bop!) till you drop at new developments The Marketplace and The Vaults or at Bolton’s out-of-town shopping experience Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Park.

Bolton is also home to the Bolton Wanderers, University of Bolton Stadium and numerous sports facilities. The Ironman contest is held here every year. The Bolton Arena, one of the many sports centres hosted badminton and mountain biking events in 2002’s Commonwealth Games displaying our ability to rise to the occasion and host world-class sport. We have produced some of the brightest athletics talents in the country

The University of Bolton is in the heart of the town and right in the centre of the UK.

On-campus, you really are in an enviable location. The town centre is easy to reach on foot, and we’re only a few minutes’ walks from the main rail and coach stations. We’re also less than a 20-minute train journey from Manchester, the biggest city in the north of England and home to international arts and sporting events.

Bolton has great transport links and is perfectly placed in the middle of the country, halfway between London and Edinburgh, and within easy reach of Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and York. Bolton is on the edge of the West Pennine Moors and not far from the Lake District, Peak District and Snowdonia national parks, as well as the seaside at Blackpool.

The town has also produced many top radio DJs, actors and entertainers. Many of the BBC’s top radio DJs are from Bolton, including:

  • Sara Cox
  • Vernon Kay
  • Mark Radcliffe
  • Radio Five star Victoria Derbyshire
There is a huge list of successful actors and comedians from Bolton, to name a few:
  • Sir Ian McKellan, known best for his role as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings
