Welcome to International Foundation Programmes & Pre-Sessional English

You need a high level of English to start an undergraduate or postgraduate course. If you need to improve your English language skills, you can take an English Pre-Sessional course. If you also need to improve your subject-specific knowledge, you can take an International Foundation Programme (IFP) or an International Pre-Masters course. Our specialist English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses offer a combination of English language, academic skills and subject content, integrating English programmes and subject programmes, and enable you to communicate effectively in an academic institution.

Testimonials

Boluwatife Oyesola

Former Students’ Union President and current PhD student | 2020

"The International Foundation Programme (IFP) at the University of Bolton is an exceptional programme.

I did the IFP in Business and Management and this programme was the foundation I needed to achieve a first class honours in my accountancy degree, become the Students’ Union President and now I am on the journey to completing my PhD. Theimpact that the programme has had in getting me to where I am is beyond compare. It has given me opportunities I never thought I could get. It was challenging but equally rewarding.

The lecturers are amazing. They are really supportive and recognise that the programme has students from different cultural backgrounds. Thus, the way in which we learn differs. The teaching was second to none and the modules deliveredwere easily comprehensible. The small class sizes made it easy to follow the teaching, made me comfortable and helped me feel connected with my cohort.

I am glad that I did the IFP at the University of Bolton. I really enjoyed the course and would recommend this programme to anyone who wants to stand out in their chosen field of study."

Sally Preece

Lecturer in English for Academic Purposes |

"Teaching international students on our pre-sessional and international foundation programmes has proved enormously rewarding. It is not every job that offers the opportunity to get to know people from so many different cultural backgrounds and nationalities.

Supporting these students during their academic journeys also allows me to explore different degree subject areas and learn about how language is used differently across disciplines.

This means I’m always learning how to improve what I do – giving students for whom English is not a first language the best possible chance of success."

Noreyne Sheikh

Studied an LC English Pre-Sessional programme | 2019

"The English Pre-Sessional course improved my reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. It boosted my energy. After completion, I felt an increase in confidence. Now I am very well equipped with the academic skills needed for my chosen degree. I would recommend this course to international students and anyone for whom English is not their first language.

The staff offer a lot of support and constantly assist students to help them develop English skills comparable to IELTS 6.0/6.5. They also help students achieve academic skills that are useful for their chosen fields."
