What type of engineering is best for you

Although the term ‘engineer’ has only been around for a few hundred years, engineering is an industry that has existed way before our time. It dates back to the construction of the Great Pyramid over 5,000 years ago and is linked to many other ancient famous structures. The definition of engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to design, build and maintain structures, machines and systems; but don’t worry, you don’t need to be an expert at science or maths to be a successful engineer!

You may be aware of some of the different types of engineering but today we’re going through a broad scale of careers you could take up. Each role plays a completely different part however, all are equally necessary and highly respected. So, let’s not waste any more time in figuring out the best route of engineering for you.

Civil Engineering

All engineering is hands-on, but if you want to be building some of the world’s largest landmarks and buildings, go civil. Civil engineering covers the construction and development of building different structures that meet the rapidly-changing needs of our society. Not only will you be working on buildings but also roads, railways, water management systems and airports, so the role will never leave you bored. There is so much for you to choose from when picking the project areas you feel you could do well in.

Most civil engineers have creative traits as they are also involved in the design and thinking of new ways to improve and innovate infrastructures. If you have those traits and are also a critical thinker and strong in communication skills, then this may be a route for you to look at. We offer a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering to provide you with the correct skills needed to be successful in this realm.

Biomedical Engineering

If you have a caring heart and are looking for ways to improve other’s health, this may be the route for you. Biomedical engineers help to apply engineering principles to medical and biological issues, mainly doing so in environments such as hospitals, research facilities, universities or government agencies, so there is a variety of possibilities. By being a part of the design and development of medical equipment you could be changing lives and creating new possibilities that haven’t been reached yet! Imagine how amazing that would be.

Can you bring strong analytic skills to the table or do you have a tendency to find solutions to problems? If yes, then you’d be a great biomedical engineer. Some people deem this to be the most challenging of all engineering paths you can take, but nothing in life is easy. So if you like to push yourself and are up for the challenge, then the University of Bolton’s BEng (Hons) Biomedical Engineering degree will support you from start to finish of your learning journey ensuring you have access to everything you need!

Electrical and Electronics Engineering

Are you interested in the development and manufacturing of creations such as robots, renewable energy systems or electrical machines? You can be a part of designing and creating all of those things by becoming an electrical and electronics engineer! You will join the ever-evolving industry of digital and could possibly be the face behind the next big thing. This type of engineer works with cutting-edge technology in order to enhance and design electrical and electronics-based gear.

Sound like something you’d like to do? If you have an active brain that loves to keep learning new things or maybe you’re an organised person who is timely and likes to prioritise tasks, either way, both are great skills to have if you want to take on this role. By taking our BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronics Engineering course, we will make sure you have a smooth and easy-going learning experience so that you can leave university with confidence towards stepping into the working world. Mechanical Engineering

Think of all the things that have moving parts… a few that come to mind may be lifts, escalators or generators. These are all things that work thanks to mechanical engineers. Without them we would be having to walk up the stairs manually everywhere, so we have a lot to thank them for.

If you are strong in physics you may find that mechanical engineering portrays the need for a lot of skills that you already have and can continue to improve by taking a BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Bolton. We have amazing facilities and tutors to help you during your studies.

Motorsport and Automotive Performance Engineering

Your dream might be to stand trackside during a formula one race and be a part of the extraordinary engineers that solve any problems quickly and effectively. Well, you can make that dream come true as a motorsport engineer!

Or you may want to become a part of producing and designing the future by being a sustainable and electric vehicle engineer. Either way, no two days will be the same if you decide to take this route as new developments are always changing the marketplace.

If you are a someone who is persistent and have determination, you will excel in this because that’s exactly what you need. If you can also bring any other skills such as analytical skills, initiative or are great at problem-solving then this will also benefit your journey to the top. At Bolton University our students have access to state-of-the-art facilities provided by the one and only National Centre for Motorsport Engineering building in the UK, which is part of our university! So, there’s no better place to gain a Motorsport and Automotive Performance Engineering degree than with us, follow the link to see the opportunities available.

Now that we have covered some of the possible route's engineering has to offer, we hope this makes your decision a lot easier, or if you weren’t already considering a future in engineering, we hope you now see how versatile and broad it is. Now you can answer the question of ‘what type of engineering is best for you’!
