Why Business Management is Vital for Growth in Start-ups

“I don’t go into ventures to make a fortune. I do it because I’m not satisfied with the way others are doing business”.

If you didn’t already know who said this, it was the British entrepreneur and owner of Virgin Group, Richard Branson. Like many, he started out small; his first business venture came at age 16 when he created his own magazine titled ‘Student’. When this began losing money, he started a mail-order record company to raise funds, this quickly became the principal label worldwide for punk and new wave.   Richard Branson Magazine Image

Success is possible for anyone; you just need business management skills to be able to implement a proper structure. If you’re interested in following the footsteps of billionaires like Richard Branson, a degree in business management could be a great investment.

At the University of Bolton, our BSc (Hons) Business Management graduates receive a Chartered Management Institute Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management; giving them an excellent start towards a professional career with global opportunities.

Entrepreneurs vs. Business Managers

You might be full of creative ideas for potential business opportunities. However, those ideas don’t make you a business manager; but they might make you an entrepreneur.

When we think of the definitions of an entrepreneur vs. business manager, it can be easy to confuse the two. An entrepreneur will use their ideas and take on financial risks in the hope of making a profit. A business manager will be responsible for managing a company’s activities and its workers. The key difference is that a business management job employs someone to manage the business operations; minimising the level of risk and increasing its success probability.

A business management course might still be right for you if you have an entrepreneurial nature. It’s a popular degree subject too, being offered at over 120 of the 141 UK universities. It is the UK’s most popular undergraduate choice; taking on over 50,000 students in the last academic year. In a survey completed by SME Loans, 64% of 18-24-year-olds in the UK would like to start their own business;making most of the UK workforce aspire to become an entrepreneur. This is a key reason why business management degrees are so popular. Completing one enables students to gain the skills to secure their dream business manager job. Students study topics ranging from finance, HR, marketing, economics, and much more; giving them a broad overview of the core principles of real-world management.

Is Business Management a good degree?

As a business manager, you should have a clear vision of the direction your business is heading. If you’re interested in business management, you might already be aware of SMART objectives; a key indicator for business managers when developing their vision.

- Specific
- Measurable
- Actionable
- Reliable
- Timely

Business managers need to be organised. They are at the top of the business’s food chain, meaning they need to be able to simultaneously maintain control of multiple projects. Without this companies are at increased risk of failure.

A business management course emphasises that to succeed in a competitive business environment, you need to be more than just an entrepreneur. It gives you the opportunity to stand out from others by giving you the knowledge to gain employment in different managerial roles. From gaining a good introduction to the business world to learning to become an effective team player, business management skills are incredibly valuable assets. If you are someone with either no or limited experience, a business management degree can give you a foundation in how successful businesses are run. Business Management
