NHS Nursing: The Supply and Demand Crisis

11/08/2022

The NHS is full of heroes; and you can become one of them with support from the University of Bolton!

Demand for nursing staff in UK hospitals is not being met. As a result, April 2022 saw the number of people on a waiting list for treatment rise to just below 6.5 million.

Nurses

In 2019, the UK government pledged to increase the number of full-time nurses by 50,000 within five years. Although statistically on track to meet this target, the latest data announced by England’s Chief Nursing Officer Ruth May shows that the target is not sufficient to cope with the volume of patients entering hospitals; leaving substantial demand for new NHS nurses.

The University of Bolton is playing an important part in addressing a problem that has serious repercussions for everyone in the UK. If you are looking for a rewarding healthcare career with immense job satisfaction, then a nursing degree from Bolton University is the first step toward having a positive impact.

The Pandemic and its Effect on Non-Covid Services

During lockdown, the British public were often advised to avoid visiting hospitals for non-covid issues to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus and over-populating them, creating a negative effect on the UK healthcare service. Cancer is one of the most common illnesses worldwide, with one in two of us being diagnosed with it in our lifetime. Services during Covid-19 saw 40,000 fewer people receiving cancer treatment. In fact, a recent YouGov survey for Cancer Research UK in May 2022 revealed that 75% of the British public believe that the NHS is understaffed and underequipped to deal with cancer.

The UK needs more nurses to achieve the target of diagnosing and starting treatment for 85% of cancer patients within 62 days of receiving an urgent referral from their GP; today, the NHS is reaching just 67.4% of this target. There has never been a more valuable time to become an NHS nurse.
