A student nurse from the University of Bolton has made it through to the final of a prestigious national awards competition.
Carly Lowndes has been recognised as a finalist in the Student Nurse of the Year (Mental Health) category of the Student Nursing Times Awards 2024.
The mum-of-three is an apprentice learner with extensive experience in the NHS and returned to education after 20 years away from studies through the APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning) route.
Carly, aged 42, said: “I am really pleased and surprised to be in the final of the awards and want to thank my lecturers for their support.”
Caroline Rawlinson, Lecturer in Nursing at the University of Bolton, said: “Despite juggling the responsibilities of caring for three young children, Carly has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication and commitment.
“She has excelled in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the programme. Her clinical proficiency, paired with her compassionate demeanour sets her apart as an exceptional student and role model for her peers.”
Carly trained as an Assistant Practitioner between 2002-2004. Before she enrolled at Bolton she worked in the Community Mental Health Team, co-ordinating admissions and discharges, as well as carrying a small caseload.
Caroline added: “Carly's story is a testament to the power of determination and resilience for those considering a return to education.
“We are incredibly proud that she has been recognised in the final of these awards and wish her the very best of luck.”
Carly said she plans to returns to the Community Mental Health Team at The Meadows in Stockport once she graduates in September, developing her role to cover out-of-area patients.
She also plans to spend time working as a qualified nurse covering the wards to enhance her skills.
The Mental Health Nursing Team has also been named as a finalist in the Best Student Experience category of the Student Nursing Times Awards 2024.
Caroline said: “At the University of Bolton, we are fully dedicated to supporting our learners every step of the way.
“Through our emphasis on smaller class sizes and interactive teaching methods, combined with personalised tutorial support, we ensure that our students have a rewarding educational experience.”
The Student Nursing Times Awards will take place on Friday 26 April at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
