Our intensive final year BA (Hons) Street Dance Artistry and Hip-Hop Theatre (top-up) course offers you the opportunity to build on your existing dance-related foundation degree or HND. Delivered in central Manchester by Shockout Arts, it provides an eclectic mix of styles and techniques, including Breaking, Popping, Locking, House, Waacking, Voguing, and Hip-Hop Foundations underpinned by core techniques. Through a range of industry-led projects and performance opportunities, you'll acquire and refine essential skills to an advanced and professional standard. We focus on preparing you for employment while continuing to nurture your creative identity and practice.

Our professional subject specialists will encourage you to develop your artistic and creative expression and support you in becoming responsive to the demands of a career as a performer, choreographer, producer, director and teacher in the dance theatre arena.

Teaching & Assessment

We use a variety of teaching and learning strategies throughout the programme to develop appropriate concepts, knowledge and skills and help you achieve the intended learning outcomes. We take a blended learning approach that includes practical sessions, lectures and workshops. The practical sessions take place in our high-specification dance studio environment. They focus on teaching each of the core technical forms and the specialist areas of Artistic Street Dance and Hip-Hop Theatre.

In addition, we'll expect you to spend time on guided independent study, for example, engaging in general background reading, preparing for seminar activities, working on assignments, and rehearsing and training. During the course, we'll support you in developing employability and information literacy skills and exploring personal development planning (PDP).

We'll expect you to attend traditional lectures, seminars, practical sessions, workshops and tutorials. You may also have opportunities to work on live projects as part of your practical modules. Through these, you can gain unique insights and a thorough understanding of the performing arts industry operating in international markets and across many sectors.

This programme's key assessment forms include in-studio technical assessments, practical skills assessments, showcase performances, practical project reports, portfolios, oral presentations, written coursework and a major research project. You'll receive feedback on your assessments to help you understand what you have done well and where you can improve.
