Through this sector-focused professional development course you’ll have the chance to hone your skills in examining adult patients in a systematic and organised way – so you can identify abnormalities and pathological changes accurately, link these changes to specific disease processes, and identify any need for more detailed investigation or referral.
We’ll support you to learn how to interpret clinical findings accurately, so you should already have a good understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology.
The course is designed to improve your communication skills, so you can get qualitative information from patients and create appropriate action plans for focused clinical examinations.
We’ll focus on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, the abdomen, the genitourinary system, the ear, nose and throat system, plus the muscular-skeletal and integumentary systems, and the ‘suddenly-taken-ill’.

Apply online: University of Bolton Advanced Professional Development Clinical Examination Skills Level 7 - 19 September 2022
As an international student you are not allowed to study this course because of the restrictions on your visa.

We use a variety of teaching methods that include a mix of lectures and practical sessions using patient simulators and peers to enable peer support and critique in a safe environment. We’ll also expose you to pathological findings that cannot be readily identified in healthy people. Mock patients’ notes are used to promote clinical reasoning skills by providing context to the examinations and specifically designed forms are used to ensure consistent documentation of clinical findings.
You’ll be given the opportunity to video each other performing examinations and then receive formative feedback on your progress. Online videos that demonstrate the examination sequence will be available for you to use as a resource for revision. After you have mastered each systematic assessment, case studies will be used to contextualise your learning for clinical practice.
A number of assessment methods are used; for instance, Observed Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and multiple choice assessments.
