Course Details

This stand-alone course is for health and social care professionals with a specialist interest in frailty. It's beneficial to work in a relevant area of practice while studying this course, as it helps you transfer your knowledge of theory and apply it in practice. The module aims to deepen your understanding of frailty's physical and psychological impact on a person's health and wellbeing.

We'll guide you to explore and evaluate evidence-based methods for detecting frailty and encourage you to consider appropriate theoretical principles as part of your decision-making process. Examining the theories surrounding frailty can help you understand the causes of frailty and the long-term impact frailty has on health and social care outcomes. We'll also support you in developing skills in frailty assessment and care planning for individuals living with frailty.

  • On successfully completing this course, you'll be awarded an Advanced Diploma of Continuing Professional Development in Care of the Frail Adult worth 20 credits at Level HE6.

  • You must have an appropriate health and social care-related qualification (e.g. registered nurse, assistant practitioner, allied health professional, or paramedic).
  • You should be working in a health and social care setting in a role where you can gain experience of working with frail adults.
  • You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.
  • If English isn’t your first language, you’ll also need IELTS 7.0 with normally no less than 6.5 in any band (or equivalent). We also accept a range of other English language qualifications – please visit our English Language Requirements web page for more details.
  • Please note that this course is subject to the University of Bolton's Fitness to Practise procedure.

This course offers academic progression in the specialist field of adult frailty and end of life care.

Course fees

Home students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Home fee of £800 for the academic year 2024/25.

Important note regarding tuition fees for the 2023-2024 academic year: EU nationals who meet residency requirements (have settled or pre-settled status) may be eligible for 'Home' fee status. If you do not meet these residency requirements, overseas fees will apply. Irish citizens living in the UK or Ireland will be eligible for 'Home' fee status under the Common Travel Area arrangement. The fees for a student's course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

As an international student you are not allowed to study this course because of the restrictions on your visa.

During this module, you'll receive keynote lectures that introduce the topics. Each lecture will be pertinent to the topic being developed, and teaching will be through wider groups to enhance your understanding and decision-making about which care planning or interventions may enhance overall outcomes for the individual. This approach will ensure you encounter a wide range of case histories and complex issues. You'll receive individual tutorials aimed at meeting your individual learning needs, plus a mixture of methods, including individual and group exercises and discussion, and self-directed study.

As well as lectures and tutorials, a range of web-based resources will be made available to you via Moodle, the University's virtual learning environment, to aid you in achieving the knowledge requirement identified. E-learning is also provided via Moodle to enable you to undertake further study in a place and at a time that's convenient for you. This programme adopts a blended learning and teaching style, including online delivery and engagement where appropriate.

Regarding assessment, you'll need to complete a written assignment designed to test your understanding of frailty. This summative assessment will contribute to your final marks and allows you to demonstrate that you've met the learning outcomes for the course.

We also use formative assessment to help you learn, provide you with feedback and inform your development, though this will not count towards your final marks.
