Our Level 5 FdSc Dental Technology - Higher Apprenticeship Integrated EPA programme is aimed at those who already have experience working in the dental technology sector and those new to the industry. It's an ideal route to progress the careers of dental care professionals, maximising their value to your organisation and supporting them to achieve their potential. Graduate dental technicians design, manufacture, modify and repair custom-made dental appliances. Dental technicians work with minimum supervision and are responsible for the quality of their finished work before it is released to the dentist and patient.
Your apprentices will spend a significant amount of their time in work undertaking work-based learning. Studying at the University complements learning in the workplace, supporting apprentices to develop the core knowledge, skills, values and behaviours required to fully comply with the requirements of the General Dental Council's learning outcomes for dental technicians. Our dynamic and multi-disciplinary course team will support your apprentices as they learn to tread the fine line between art and science in manufacturing precise custom-made medical appliances with the attention to detail, aesthetics and manual dexterity expected of fine artists.
If you're looking for undergraduate-level training in this subject area but don't work for an employer that offers apprenticeships, please see our related courses section for details of study opportunities that don't require current employment.
The General Dental Council (GDC) inspected the University of Bolton's FdSc Dental Technology provision in 2019 and reported that the programme is fit for purpose to develop individuals for professional registration as dental technicians.
As a graduate of this programme, your employee will be able to apply for registration as a dental care professional with the GDC. GDC registration is a requirement to practice in this field.
Where changes are made to material information contained in this course description or a decision is taken to suspend a course between the offer of admissions and enrolment, we will inform applicants at the earliest possible opportunity and will outline the various options available to the applicant.
The University of Bolton's FdSc Dental Technology - Higher Apprenticeship Integrated EPA programme is designed to meet the Dental Technician (Integrated) (ST0108) apprenticeship standard.
Upon graduation from this programme, your apprentices will possess a comprehensive understanding of oral anatomy and physiology from a dental perspective, both in terms of appliance design, and the methods and technologies used to construct dental appliances to meet the patient's needs.
This FdSc course focuses on equipping your apprentices with the skills and knowledge necessary to advance your commercial activities in dental technology.
Apprentices will need to be employed by your organisation for a minimum of 30 hours per week. Your organisation will also need to commit to sponsoring apprentices to complete this qualification.
For further information on how your organisation can access funds to support apprentices, please e-mail apprentices@bolton.ac.uk.
Whether you’re an employer, employee or school leaver, please visit our Apprenticeship web page for support and advice regarding apprenticeships.
As an international student you are not allowed to study this course because of the restrictions on your visa.
We offer a wide range of full-time courses in lots of different subjects, many of our courses start in September and January. If you would like to see what courses are available please visit our Course Search.
Apprentices will not be expected to pay tuition fees towards this programme. If your organisation has a wage bill of more than £3 million per annum, then it may be able to fund this apprenticeship through its Apprenticeship Levy contributions. If your organisation does not pay the levy, it will be eligible for government support to fund apprenticeships. This support, called co-investment, covers 95% of the apprenticeship's tuition fees, with your organisation funding the remaining 5% of the fees.
Important note regarding tuition fees for the 2023-2024 academic year: EU nationals who meet residency requirements (have settled or pre-settled status) may be eligible for 'Home' fee status. If you do not meet these residency requirements, overseas fees will apply. Irish citizens living in the UK or Ireland will be eligible for 'Home' fee status under the Common Travel Area arrangement. Please read the student finance for EU students web page on www.gov.uk for information.
The fees for a student's course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

This programme applies blended learning, work-based training and teaching methods. Apprentices will participate in on-campus face-to-face sessions and use online remote delivery software and the University's virtual learning environment, Moodle. At lectures, seminars and tutorials, your apprentices will have the opportunity to learn the theory of dental technology subjects and discuss topics directly with their tutor and classmates. Practical workshops and demonstrations will support them in building practical skills and applying the theory they have learned in all dental technology disciplines. Your apprentices will spend most of their time in the workplace, with a minimum of six hours per week being devoted to off-the-job training and university learning.
Your organisation will need to provide each apprentice with a workplace mentor to support their development. They will also benefit from regular visits from a University tutor. The workplace mentor, University tutor and apprentice will work together to create the individual learning plan required to progress the apprentice's professional body membership. An individual learner record (ILR) will be completed on a monthly basis.
University staff will evaluate your apprentices' practical abilities in your working environment, and work-based mentors will play a key role in the continuing development of their skills. Observation, evaluation and application exercises will guide your apprentices in establishing technical processes, helping them build skills in the construction of dental appliances.
Assessments include essays, reports, oral presentations, employment journals and portfolio entries, as well as practical manufacturing tasks and exams. Some assessments contribute to their final module marks, while others are designed to help them identify their strengths and weaknesses, and show where they need to seek extra support from course tutors. In keeping with the part-time nature of the course, written assessments are weighted more heavily than exams in terms of grade value compared to the dental technology undergraduate degree programme.
The modules listed below may be a mixture of compulsory and optional. You may not have the opportunity to study all the modules shown as part of the course.
