University of Bolton joins forces with Northwest-based gaming company

A pioneering partnership between the University of Bolton and a Northwest gaming company will give students the unique chance to work closely with industry professionals and potentially even secure a job after graduating.

The University’s Gaming degree programmes have joined forces with Manchester-based Fabrik Games.

The company’s Studio Director Errol Ismail said that following initial work with the University, offers have already been made to two students.
Errol said: “As the partnership continues, we hope to be able to offer more jobs to students at our studio, at the same time helping to give everyone on the courses the opportunity to prepare themselves to be ready to move into the gaming industry straight from education.

“I have always been a big believer in the importance of education and part of Fabrik’s strategy was always to recruit new people at the graduate level and then develop and train that talent.

“To do this we wanted a partner in the Northwest and from the moment we met with the team from the University of Bolton we knew they were the right fit.

“They were also looking for a partner and the great thing we noticed about the Gaming programmes at Bolton is that all the leaders have worked in the industry and absolutely understand the level of skills required by employers and how those needs change so often.”

He added: “Our aim through the collaboration is to ensure that students on the courses are being taught the very latest techniques and skills.

“It is crucial that students who pursue the game development route can hit the ground running and are not left behind. The key to that is making sure they are fully prepared for a move from university into the industry and that is what we are aiming to do through our work with Bolton.

“We have been able to influence the course content and there is an option for final year students to tackle a Fabrik project. All students will receive regular coaching, feedback, and mentoring.

“We want as a business to become embedded in what the students are doing on these fantastic courses.”

Carrie Warwick, Senior Lecturer in Games Art, and Programme Leader for Games Design, said: “We are extremely excited to be able to announce this partnership with Fabrik Games.

“We will be working closely alongside their team over the coming years to further develop and continually improve the content of all our Games courses to align them with this fast-paced and growing industry.”
