Andrea Mason

Senior Lecturer, TNA Programme Lead

With 17 years in clinical practice, predominately in ED, and 23 years in education, mainly focusing on acute care, simulation and skills, teaching is informed by these specialisms, and the academic work undertaken for a master’s degree.

Having previously been a practice lead for 10 years, this also informs teaching activities in the classroom and in clinical practice, transferring to simulation and skills sessions in the sim suite. Understanding of clinical practice also informs supervision of students in practice, and supporting Practice assessors and supervisors to understand the process to ensure that students get the best experience and are able to successfully complete.

Recent completion of a professional doctorate, subject to minor amendments, has also further informed teaching of research activities and supervision of students up to level 8, although not in current post.

Research Interests and Research Subject Specialisms
Previous supervision of students on master’s degree programmes, and on a professional doctorate module, has widened experience, with understanding of the need to be pragmatic, in students’ choices of research methodology.

Whilst inherently an interpretivist, supervising students undertaking positivist research has strengthened an understanding and appreciation of the methodology.

Title of master’s degree dissertation – the lived experience of students in practice, this claimed the use of Heideggerian Phenomenology, since discredited in a doctoral assignment.

Title of Professional Doctoral thesis – the questioning of intuition, a post structural analysis of nurses stories.

Teaching on research has ranged from level 4 evidence based practice, level 6 independent project, level 7 critical literature review and level 8 developing professional practice, promoting the use of a philosophical approach to research methodology, as opposed to being process driven.
