The department of English and Creative Writing has been ranked number 2 overall, in the whole of the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2020, which is “aimed specifically at students who are trying to choose a course.” This significant recognition of the department’s “Teaching Intensive, Research Informed” approach comes after numerous accolades in recent years, including robust results in student satisfaction from the National Student Survey and the Complete University Guide. It places English and Creative Writing at Bolton above traditional heavyweights in the subject area, including Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews, UCL, York and Lancaster. According to the national newspaper’s website, the Guardian guide “ranks universities on all the factors that are most important to young people: how much they will benefit from the teaching, whether current students like the university and the subject and what their chances are of getting a good job.” Said Sam Johnson, Head of the School of the Arts: “This has been a fabulous year for English and Creative Writing at the University of Bolton. We have achieved excellent outcomes across several national league tables in recognition of the quality of the learning and teaching provision that we provide for students. This year, lecturers have won a range of prizes and awards. We have hosted a hugely successful international conference celebrating Walt Whitman – and now our English and Creative Writing courses have been ranked as 2nd overall in the UK in the Guardian University League Tables. An amazing achievement! We are delighted with this outcome, mainly because this recognition is so well-deserved.” Speaking about the success, Head of Department Dr Jill Marsden said: “We are delighted to gain this recognition for our English and Creative Writing programmes at Bolton. This high ranking is a testament to the expertise of our staff and the wonderful achievements of our students.” Learn more about our English and Creative Writing courses.
