On 26th March 2025, three talented teams from the University of Greater Manchester’s School of Engineering proudly represented the university at the IMechE Design Challenge – North West Regional Final, held at the University of Manchester.

Bringing together engineering students from across the region, the challenge tested competitors on their design, manufacturing, and teamwork skills in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment that mirrors the realities of the engineering industry.

We’re thrilled to share that Team Mechanical G3 achieved an impressive third place overall—a fantastic achievement and testament to their creativity, technical skill, and determination.

But the competition was about more than rankings. For our students, it was an invaluable hands-on learning experience: tackling real-world engineering problems, working to tight deadlines, managing projects, and collaborating under pressure. All essential skills for their future careers as mechanical engineers.

Beyond the technical challenge, the event was an opportunity to network with peers and industry professionals, proudly showcasing the University of Greater Manchester’s engineering talent on a regional stage.

Reflections from the Student team:

“For the IMechE Challenge 2025, we formed a team called Mechanical G3, bringing together a diverse set of skills from both professional and academic backgrounds. Confident in our capabilities, we chose to take on the Advanced Challenge… Now, on the other side of the competition, we’ve not only deepened our technical skills in robotics and programming but also strengthened our ability to work collaboratively under pressure.”

“The challenge gave me a professional experience and left me inspired to pursue a career where I can manage projects and engage in engineering-based problem solving.”

Alnablosi Ahmed, Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, said “We’re incredibly proud of all three teams for their hard work and dedication. Congratulations again to Team Mechanical G3 on their third-place finish—a well-deserved recognition of their engineering excellence!”

Dr Mamadou Ndiaye, Programme Leader of MSc Mechanical Engineering said “I’m exceptionally proud of all three teams from Mechanical Engineering students for their outstanding performance at the IMechE Design Challenge. Team Mechanical G3's remarkable achievement of third place exemplifies the creativity, skill, and dedication that define our engineering programmes at the University of Greater Manchester. This success demonstrates our commitment to nurturing industry-ready engineers equipped with practical experience, collaborative teamwork”
