Judge Peter Thornton QC

Member of the Industry Advisory Board, Centre for Contemporary Coronial Law

His Honour Judge Peter Thornton QC

Judge Thornton was appointed as the first Chief Coroner of England and Wales in September 2012, a position created by the Coroners and Justice Act 2009. He is a Senior Circuit Judge at the Central Criminal Court (the Old Bailey).

During his tenure as CC he has issued guidance to Coroners on topics as varied as the use of non-invasive post mortems and the listing of Inquests.

It is noteworthy that delays in hearing Inquests have been considerably reduced nationally as a result.
