Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Mentee(s) Will I Have?

Mentor's are expected to work with one mentee at a time. There may be additional opportunities to take part in group work and social activities throughout the scheme.

What Does Mentoring Involve?

As a mentor, you will be expected to assist and guide students in order to help them in their career planning process and help them to explore their ideas further. As a mentor it is anticipated that you will share with your mentee, your experiences and advice on topics such as career advancement, enhancing professional visibility and overcoming barriers to careers success.

What Will Be My Time Commitment?

Mentors will be expected to meet face-to-face three times during the course of the mentoring relationship. This is the minimum expectation. Contact beyond this is encouraged, either by phone or email.

Mentors are also expected to attend an initial meeting with the Alumni Development Officer to discuss the scheme, and also a half-day training session prior to being paired with a mentee.

Where Will I Meet My Mentee?

The mentoring meetings will take place at a location that is suitable and convenient for both parties. This may be on university premises, at a local café or even at your place of work. Mentoring should never take place at either the mentor's or mentee's home. Future locations for the meetings need to be agreed with your mentee at the beginning of the relationship.

What If I Have Any Problems with My Mentee?

If you are having problems with your mentee, you must bring this to the attention of the alumni office as soon as possible. We will, of course, endeavour to solve any problems you may be having, but will ultimately try to match you to another mentee if needed.

Will I Receive Any Training?

Mandatory training will be available for all new mentors. This will consist of two sessions and will cover aspects such as:

  • What is mentoring and how can it help?
  • Phases of the mentoring relationship.
  • Ground rules and boundaries for the mentoring relationship.
  • Action planning and setting goals.
  • University policy and procedures.
