Dr Andy Baldwin

Assistant Teaching Professor

I first joined the University of Bolton as a Lecturer in Biochemistry in October 2013. I am now an Assistant Teaching Professor. I am programme leader for the BSc (Hons) Medical Biology programme, as well as the co-programme leader for the BEng (Hons) Biomedical Engineering programme. I teach across both of these programmes, in subjects such as molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and regenerative medicine.

Prior to joining the University of Bolton, I worked for nine years as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Manchester, in a laboratory led by Professor Cay Kielty. My research focus during this time was cell-matrix biology, in particular, understanding how cells coordinate cell-matrix deposition, and how the matrix, in turn, regulates cell function. This research has given me extensive experience in a wide range of molecular, cellular and medical biology techniques, and it is this practical experience that I now particularly enjoy sharing with my students at Bolton. I still collaborate with the University of Manchester on various research projects.

I studied for an undergraduate degree in Molecular Cell Biology at the University of Nottingham and remained at Nottingham to gain my PhD from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences under the supervision of Professor Martyn Davies (CBE). My PhD was co-funded by GlaxoSmithKline and focused on characterising the interactions between DNA and lipid in a novel liposomal gene delivery system. Having research experience in the field of biophysics as well as cell biology, is of great benefit for one of my current research interests, which is the design of novel scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. My undergraduate students at the University of Bolton assist me with this research.
