Directions a Medical Biology degree can take you

If you have strong science skills and want to put them to effective use, medical biology may be the degree for you. It opens so many doors with options to go down routes such as healthcare, medical research, medicine, pharmaceutical and many more. We put together a few of the common career paths people take after graduating with a Medical Biology degree so you can see some of the opportunities that would be available to you.

Clinical Scientists

Can you use your initiative and be thorough with all your work? Then this could be a position of interest to you.

Taking on this role means you will research and develop techniques and equipment that help in preventing, diagnosing, and treating illnesses. It is most definitely a rewarding career, knowing that your work could be changing lives. During an average day you may be expected to:

- Support clinical staff with helping patients

- Develop research

- Collect and analyse data

- Study cells

These are just a few of the tasks you will be trained to carry out. After you graduate you can go straight into training which takes around two to three years. From then on you will be fully qualified and a key part of the healthcare industry.

Physician Associate

After gaining your Medical Biology degree, your educational journey does not have to be over. A physician associate is a fairly new role in the UK; meaning there is quite a demand for workers in this role. The University of Bolton now offers an MSC Physician Associate Studies course that students who graduate with a minimum 2:2 Medical Biology degree can take. If you go down this career path, you will have many responsibilities such as carrying out examinations, diagnosis and providing care for patients.

Typically, in this role, you will be working in a team in a GP or Hospital. So, you will need to have strong communication skills, be able to tackle problems and be committed to giving patients the care they deserve.

Biotechnologist

With the world constantly producing technology advancements, imagine how it would feel to be someone behind a new medical technology breakthrough! As a biotechnologist, your work will be dedicated to:

- Researching and treating diseases

- Developing therapies, vaccines, and hormones to treat the causes of diseases

- Studying human genetics, proteins, antibodies and more

- Producing medicines using a variety of techniques

As well as a medical biology degree, you will need to bring skills to the table such as:

- The ability to work on your own and in a team

- Have a fair amount of computing knowledge

- Excellent thinking skills
