On successfully completing our BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science with foundation year, which is accredited by the IBMS, you'll be ready to gain professional experience in a hospital pathology laboratory and take the next steps towards registration as a professional biomedical scientist*. Alternatively, you could seek work in commercial and industrial laboratories or use your knowledge of human biology and disease as the basis for postgraduate and doctoral-level studies for a career in biomedical research.
The foundation year centres on preparing you for degree-level study. It offers an excellent grounding in the fundamentals of biology, chemistry, and mathematics alongside the development of study skills.
When you progress to degree-level, our expert team will support you in developing the firm understanding and practical know-how vital to your future career in biomedical science. We'll focus on equipping you with hands-on laboratory and practical experience teamed with an invaluable grounding in scientific theory. Our academics will lead you in an exploration of human biology from a medical perspective, investigating the causes of illness and the established and cutting-edge methods and technologies used to treat disease. We'll cover anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, haematology, transfusion science and physiology, supporting you in building an integrated understanding of human biology and the life sciences more generally.
Our dedicated and supportive team will introduce you to the principles of scientific investigation and a range of experimental techniques and equipment. We offer in-depth practical sessions in our high-spec teaching laboratories where you can gain experience using a wide variety of relevant biomedical instrumentation. In your final year, you'll have the opportunity to carry out a 10-week laboratory project under the guidance of our qualified academic staff. We'll also support you in gaining vital lifelong learning skills to prepare you to research new techniques and developments and apply your knowledge in new ways. As a graduate of this course, you'll be well prepared to keep abreast of innovations and enhancements in the biomedical sciences throughout your career.

Our excellent facilities ensure that on-campus laboratory-based projects are available to all our biomedical science students.
As part of the professional practice module at the honours level, you may be able to gain work experience in a career-relevant environment by undertaking a short placement (150 hours). Such placements enhance your CV and help build your network of industry contacts. We're based in the Queens Specialist Building, which offers modern teaching laboratories and classrooms, a high-spec instrumentation laboratory, a microscopy facility, a microbiology laboratory and a tissue engineering suite, all dedicated to undergraduate teaching.
Our anatomy and physiology classes take place in Bolton One. This facility contains large, spacious clinics for learning anatomy and a well-equipped physiology laboratory.
You'll have opportunities to explore medical biochemistry, molecular genetics, medical microbiology, clinical immunology, haematology, and transfusion science.
We prefer to keep lecture and practical classes relatively small so that you have plenty of opportunities to ask our friendly, supportive tutors for help and benefit from the ideas and support offered by your classmates. Our small class sizes also allow you to learn sophisticated laboratory procedures that would not be possible in larger groups.
By inviting experts in specialist areas of biology and biomedicine to give guest lectures and provide an overview of their research and professional experience, we aim to enhance your learning and help you make contacts in the industry.
You'll also have the chance to attend our annual careers event and be inspired by the career journeys of successful experts in the biomedical field.

Any subjects are acceptable at Level 3. Biology, chemistry or other relevant science-related subjects are preferred.
You should also have five GCSEs at grade C or above or grade 4 to 9 (or equivalent), including English, Mathematics and Science.
You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.
If you later wish to transfer to our BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science with placement year course and are successful in your transfer application, you'll need to meet further conditions to secure your placement. We'll discuss these with you during levels HE4 and HE5 of the course. Each organisation offering placements will have specific conditions you must meet before attending their placement. The exact requirements will vary depending on the nature of the organisation and placement. For example, the conditions for an NHS placement will include: (1) As the placement involves regulated activity, you'll need to get an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). (2) You'll be required to pass occupational health screening satisfactorily. (3) You'll need to demonstrate that you're of good health and good character before transfer and on an ongoing basis throughout your studies and career. This list is not exhaustive.

What can I do with this qualification?
You're likely to wish to pursue registration as a biomedical scientist to work in NHS clinical pathology laboratories. This BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science with foundation year course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). This degree is designed to meet the academic components required for registration as a biomedical scientist by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Once you graduate from an IBMS-accredited degree, you'll need to undertake a period of clinical laboratory training in an IBMS-approved laboratory and complete the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio. Should you be successful in this, the IBMS will then issue you an IBMS Certificate of Competence to show you're eligible to apply to the HCPC for registration as a biomedical scientist. Alternatively, if your degree is not IBMS accredited, you can ask the IBMS to assess your degree, where they will identify any educational shortfall. You'll then be able to apply to universities that offer IBMS-approved degrees to study additional modules to fulfil the academic requirements for HCPC registration before you seek the clinical laboratory training described above.

If you're attracted to a career in medicine, you may be interested in becoming a physician associate (PA). Physician associates work under the direct supervision of a doctor and carry out many similar tasks, including patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. The University of Bolton's MSc Physician Associate Studies course is open to BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science with foundation year graduates who achieve at least a lower second class (2.2) honours degree and takes only two years to complete. Home students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Home fee of £4,500 for the academic year 2024/25.
