University of Bolton student midwife Sam wins top accolade after maternity staff’s vote

University of Bolton student midwife Sam Fielding is celebrating after being voted student of the year.

Sam, aged 31, a third year student at Wigan, Wrightington and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, beat off competition from other students from Edge Hill, UCLAN and Salford to win the accolade.

And the news was extra special, as she found out the good news on the International Day of the Midwife earlier this month!

Maternity staff at the Trust’s  Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan, where Sam has been working as part of her University course, had to cast their votes for Student Midwife of the Year.

Sam said: “When I found out that I had been nominated for Student Midwife of the year I was really shocked, I never expected to be chosen for something like this.

“Training to be a midwife is one of the hardest things I have ever done and for my hard work to be recognised feels amazing.

“I have fantastic support from the entire maternity team, and I could not have gotten this far in my training without the valuable time and effort staff members have given me.”

Sam, who is mum to six-year-old Theo, added: “I was presented with a huge bouquet of flowers and the fact it was on the same day as the International Day of the Midwife made it even better.”

Gemma Moss, who is Sam’s personal tutor and Programme Lead/Senior Lecturer Midwifery at the University of Bolton, said: “It has been a pleasure to teach and support Sam. She has flourished into a caring and competent student midwife.

“Sam is a dedicated, proactive student midwife who always goes above and is an asset to the world of midwifery and I am sure she will have a long and successful career. The midwifery team are proud of her achievements.”
