Three New Laws Coming This Year

UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak has hit the headlines with his ‘Stop the Boats’ plan to crack down on migrant arrivals to the UK. A plan which the CEO of the Refugee Council, Enver Solomon, believes to be the ‘toughest asylum policy’ ever brought to the UK and across Western Europe. Have you been following the story? This is just a start to the legal policies we can expect to see this year. This blog explores three policies to look out for if you’re considering embarking on a career in law. 

Higher Care Costs  

Do you currently need social care support to care for an elderly member of your family? If so, social care costs are set to increase from Autumn 2023 with a cap of £86,000. 

The law is set to affect those with assets of between £75,000 and £150,000, who will be obliged to pay for access to social care. Do you currently benefit from the lower cost-of-living in the north compared to the south? Due to lower housing costs in the north, northerners will be expected to use more of their assets to pay for social care.  

Noisy Protests are Set to be Banned 

Are you fed up with noisy protests taking place outside your home or workplace?  

Good news! The Police, Crime, Courts, and Sentencing Bill is set to place more restrictions on protests that cause serious disruption in society. Coming into play later this year, watch this space! 

Homeowners will Need to Pay an Unsafe Property Fee 

Do you live or know anyone who lives in a flat? Remember the catastrophe caused by the fire at the Grenfell block of flats in London? 

The 2017 fire hit the headlines because of the cladding made from plastic and aluminium that was installed on all sides of the building to make it warmer and drier. Unfortunately, the cladding had a tragic effect when the fire broke out as it helped spread the flames, resulting in 72 deaths.  

Moving forward, owners of unsafe flats will now be forced to pay up to £15,000 to have them fixed under the Building Safety Bill. The Grenfell fire caused the government to implement an action plan for cladding, but many flat owners also have non-cladding defects. As these are not covered by the government scheme, there is now a legal fee of £10,000, and £15,000 in London to get the issues fixed.
