26/04/2023
In the growing economy we live in, there is almost a demand for everything with over 1.1 million vacancies currently available. However, special effects make-up is a career that not many people consider taking. And, therefore, most don’t know the many wonderful opportunities this role comes with.
The short answer is yes, there is a demand for special effects make-up artists. As the film industry continues to grow, more characters are in need of being bought to reality and that’s where these artists come into place.
Why are special effects make-up artists important?
Over the years we have seen cosmetics, chemicals and prosthetics advance; enabling humans to transform into monsters through the detailed work of special effects make-up artists. They are important because without them characters in your favourite movies such as
- Harry Potter
- Avatar
- E.T.
- The Grinch
And many more wouldn’t be as realistic as they are now.
How to start your Special Effect Make-Up career
Special effects make-up is a form of art used to create the illusion that something fake is real. And that’s exactly what these artists do. The University of Bolton offers many different Film FX courses to cater to the area of film you may want to go into. If you are interested in becoming a recognised film creative make-up designer, then the BDes (Hons) Special Make-up Effects for Film and TV course may be the one for you.
With this course, we take a deep dive into prosthetics and teach you everything you need to know to become a highly skilled make-up artist and potentially the designer behind a successful on-screen storyteller.
Key highlights of the course:
