Social work is a profession driven by compassion, empathy, and a relentless desire to create positive change. Whether you're an aspiring social worker, a seasoned professional, or simply someone interested in understanding the pivotal role of social workers, this blog will take you through the journey of how to step into the world of social work.
1: Choose Your Path:
Social work has a broad spectrum of roles, from child protection to mental health support, and even working with the elderly. Before diving in, take some time to explore the various roles within the field. Research will help you identify which area resonates with your passions and strengths.
Step 2: Obtain a Relevant Degree:
To start your social work journey, a degree in social work is essential. Many universities offer accredited courses that provide the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills, and lucky for you, the University of Bolton is one of them!
These courses typically last around three years and include placements where you can gain hands-on experience in real-world settings, enhancing your learning experience.
Step 3: Gain Practical Experience:
During your degree, you'll likely be required to complete field placements. This won’t be an issue if you decide to study and enjoy #UniAsItShouldBe, we have strong industry links that help our students secure great placements.
These placements provide valuable experience, allowing you to apply classroom knowledge in real-world situations. You'll work alongside experienced social workers, learning the ropes and developing your skills while making a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families.
Step 4: Registration and Professional Development:
Once you have graduated, you'll need to register with the appropriate regulatory body. In the UK, this is the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Registration ensures that you meet the necessary standards and are equipped to provide safe and effective social work services.
Continuing professional development (CPD) is also crucial to stay updated with the latest practices and advancements in the field. This is something we will encourage you to keep up whilst studying.

Step 5: Explore Your Options:
After gaining some experience, you might decide to specialise further. Whether you're interested in working with refugees, the LGBTQ+ community, or those struggling with addiction, there are numerous diverse routes to explore. You can also consider pursuing postgraduate qualifications to enhance your expertise in a specific area.
After graduating and registration, your future is in your hands and the doors begin to open to the many opportunities that a social work degree provides, you could end up working in:
