Course Details

The University of Bolton's professional development course in Negotiated Studies aims to help you develop knowledge and skills for a specific aspect of your role that will benefit you and your employer. You can choose the area of focus. You may wish to explore a particular issue affecting your work, develop your clinical skills or pursue further study. We'll work with your employer (where possible) to negotiate appropriate learning outcomes and assessment strategies. You'll also have the opportunity to outline plans for your own development and negotiate a programme of study that meets the necessary criteria.

During the work-based programme, you'll be largely responsible for your learning and demonstrating your achievements. We'll also expect you to review your development and assessment plans critically.

If you decide to progress with further study on completing this course, you'll be able to use the credits you've earned towards the University of Bolton's MSc Health and Social Care.

When you successfully complete this course, the University of Bolton will award you an Advanced Diploma of CPD in Negotiated Studies worth 20 credits at Level HE7.

You must offer current professional registration as a health or social care practitioner.
We may also consider applicants offering recent study at Level HE6.
Preferably, you should be working in a health and social care setting in a role where you have a specific professional development need that requires a bespoke programme of study.
As this is an online course, you'll need access to a computer with the appropriate software and accessories, including a webcam, microphone and a sufficient broadband connection. You'll also need basic IT skills. In particular, you'll need to be able to access and use the University of Bolton's virtual learning environment, Moodle. Please contact the programme leader for details if you are uncertain that you'll be able to meet these requirements.
You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.
If English isn’t your first language, you’ll also need IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band (or equivalent). We also accept a range of other English language qualifications – please visit our English Language Requirements web page for more details.

Home students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Home fee of £800 for the academic year 2024/25.

Overseas students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Overseas fee of £800 for the academic year 2024/25.

You'll need to attend the scheduled online sessions that introduce the aims and objectives of the programme remotely. They will help you establish a learning framework that will support you in meeting the programme's learning outcomes.

To help you achieve your personal and professional goals, your supervisor will offer support and advice on developing your area of study through a series of individual online tutorials.

You'll have the opportunity to submit a sample of work to meet one or more of the learning outcomes. We expect you to complete this formative assessment and will offer you feedback so you can see what you have done well and identify areas that need further development.

We adopt a blended learning and teaching style, including online delivery and engagement where appropriate.
