Why are engineers in high demand?

It is commonly known that engineers are to thank for the design, production and maintenance of many amazing infrastructures, machines and more; however, have you ever considered that we might run out of engineers? This would delay the progression of things we use on a day-to-day basis. Well believe it or not, we are heading towards that point. There is now a high demand for engineers across all sectors.

This blog is to bring awareness to the demand for engineers and hopefully spark some motivation for anyone considering an engineering route. Read on if you want to find out the issues and how you could make a difference!

Why are engineers in demand?

The answer might seem simple: there aren’t enough workers. But that isn’t the whole reason why engineers are in demand. There is quite a large skills gap, globally, when it comes to engineering. This means not enough people are qualified or are working in the industry - which is why things may begin to slow down.

You may not be aware, but engineering accounts for a large 18% of the UK’s employment market, meaning that the recent rise in job vacancies will have significantly affected the engineering industry. We know that there are currently 1.1 million job vacancies in the UK that are not being filled at a satisfactory rate, but this isn’t just happening in this country. It's happening in different places all over the world and this seems to be one of the industries that is taking a big hit because of it.

Why engineers are important?

Humans evolve rapidly. Therefore, new societal trends come alive constantly and engineers have to keep up with the changes in order to keep their clients satisfied. They take on challenging projects, solve major problems, create new technology and improve existing ones; making our lives safer, easier and more efficient. Without engineers, the world wouldn’t be as half as advanced as it is now!

How we can solve the skill gap

To solve the skill gap, the steps we need to take are simple. We need to have more skilled workers! Whether this is by obtaining an engineering degree, taking a course that makes you qualified enough to be independent in the role or furthering your current skill set to meet the standard of the engineering route you take.
