Equivalent Level Qualifications 

Please note for courses commencing from September 2009 or later, if you already have a Higher Education (HE) qualification from an institution in the U.K. or elsewhere in the world you will not be eligible for further student support under the ELQ regulations for a second equivalent or lower level HE qualification. This rule applies whether the previous qualification was: 

  • Studied in the U.K. or elsewhere in the world
  • Self funded or publicly funded
  • Studied on a full-time, full-time distance learning, compressed or part-time basis 
  • Studied in a different subject to the course you are considering
  • Studied in the past however long ago

Funding for students whose courses or circumstances are in the exempt categories will be restricted to maintenance loan only plus supplementary grants

Previous study at Higher Education level 

 Funding is available in general for the length of the course plus, if necessary, 1 extra year.

 Any period of funding within an academic year is classed as 1 whole year's funding e.g. if you received funding for 1 semester, then suspended studies, the extra year would have been used up

 If you exceed 1 additional year, funding will be restricted at the beginning of the further study period

  • Restricted funding is usually maintenance loan only, no tuition fee loan, no maintenance grant 
  •    

    Funding for Full Time U.K. Undergraduates and PGDE/PDE students     

    Tuition Fees 

    Fees for a full time undergraduate degree course for the academic year of 2010/11 are £3,290. These fees are subject to change for subsequent years of the course. 

    Fees for full-time PGDE/PDE courses for the academic year of 2010/11 are £2,193. 

    Financial Support from the government 

    If this is your first HE qualification you will be eligible to apply for financial assistance from the government to help you fund your studies. Applications are made either online or on form PN1 to Student Finance England, visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance to apply online or download the application. Eligibility and entitlement will be based on your household income. Below is a list of what is available. 

    Tuition Fee Loan 

    Full time students have the option of taking out a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the cost of their fees. Fees will then be paid from the Student Loan Company direct to the university. Repayments of the Tuition Fee Loan are made to the Student Loan Company. You are allowed to defer payment of the Tuition Fees until you have finished your course and are earning over £15,000.

    Student Maintenance Loan 

    A student loan of up to £4,950 will be available for full time students studying at the University of Bolton. The maximum amount of loan that you are entitled to is reduced if you are living at home with your parents, are in your final year, or are receiving maintenance grant.

    Maintenance Grant 

    A non repayable grant of up to £2,906 per annum will be available to full time students, subject to household income, for each year of their degree. 

    To receive the full £2,906 grant the household income must be below £25,000.

    To receive a partial grant the household income must be between £25,001 and £50,020. 

    Full-time PGDE/PDE students may also be eligible to receive the maintenance grant subject to the above household income thresholds. 

    Childcare Grant 

    For full time students with dependant children in registered and approved childcare. A payment of up to 85% of actual childcare costs is available, (maximum £148.75 per week for one child and £255 per week for two or more children) dependant on household income. 

    Parents' Learning Allowance 

    For full time students who have dependant children. A payment of three instalments totalling a maximum of £1,508 a year is available, dependant on household income.  

    Adult Dependants' Grant 

    For full time students with adult dependants. A payment of three instalments totalling a maximum of £2,642 is available, as long as the adult dependant's income does not exceed £3,796. 

    Disabled Student's Allowance 

    Available for full time, part time, undergraduate and postgraduate students with disabilities. The Disabled Students Allowance helps with costs you incur when attending you course, as a direct result of you Disability.     PGDE/PDE Bursary 

    For PGDE/PDE Students only. A bursary of up to £7,000 may be available. Eligibility for this bursary is dependant on the student training to teach a "shortage subject" as designated by the government. Not all subjects attract this bursary. For further information please contact:

    Information for European Union Students 

    If you are a national of the European Union or a child of an EU National you may be entitled to some forms of student support dependent on your chosen course. For all EU students a Tuition Fee Loan is available. The application form EU10N is available from:

    Financial Support from the University for undergraduate   

    Various additional awards for University of Bolton undergraduate students are available as follows: 

    Bolton Bursary* 

    A tax free bursary of up to £350 per academic year. Assessed on household income and payable to the student in two instalments in January and May 

    To receive the full £350 bursary the household income must be below £39,333.

    To receive a partial bursary of £120 the household income must be between £39,334 and £60,032. 

    Bolton Scholarship* 

    This is a non means tested grant of £750 per academic year. Scholarships will be awarded to all UK undergraduate students, irrespective of their financial means, who study on a University of Bolton undergraduate higher education course having successfully completed an approved preparatory course or period of study at: 

    • A partner institution who has entered into a Progression Accord with the University or the University itself on an Access course.

    Excellence Scholarship* 

    The Excellence Scholarship of £500 per annum will be awarded to all full-time U.K. undergraduate students, irrespective of their financial means, who progress to a University of Bolton undergraduate higher education course having successfully accumulated a minimum of 300 UCAS points at A2 level or equivalent. 

    Care Leavers Scholarship* 

    The Care Leavers Scholarship of £1,000 per annum will be awarded to full-time U.K. undergraduate students leaving a Care background, irrespective of their financial means, who progress to a University of Bolton undergraduate higher education course. 

    Vice Chancellor's Award* 

    The Vice Chancellor's Award, of £15,000, will be awarded to the most outstanding and academically-gifted full-time U.K. undergraduate students, irrespective of their financial means, who progress to a University of Bolton undergraduate higher education course. The award will be paid in instalments over the duration of the course.

    Access to Learning Fund 

    If you have unexpected financial problems while you are studying at

    Bolton you can apply for the Access to Learning Fund. This fund enables the University to provide selective help, on a discretionary basis, to students who are in extreme financial difficulty. As a registered student at Bolton, you can apply for financial assistance at any time, providing you are have taken out the maximum student funding offered.

  • Part Time Undergraduate and PGDE/PDE Students

    Tuition Fees 

    Part Time fees are charged on a per module basis and vary depending on which course that you are studying. For the latest fees please contact the Student Funding Adviser on 01204 903497 or a Student Adviser on 01204903733

    Support from the Government 

    If this is your first part-time undergraduate or part-time PGDE/PDE course you may be eligible to apply for financial assistance from the government to help you fund your studies. Application forms PTG1 are available from www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance .Eligibility and entitlement will be based on your household income. Below is a list of what is available. 

    Tuition Fee Grant 

    In 2010/11 part time students may be eligible for a grant for fees up to a maximum of £1,230. Please note that you cannot receive a grant which is higher than your overall tuition fee cost e.g. if the cost of your course for an academic year is £1,000 then you can receive no more than £1,000. The amount received is determined by your household income, (for maximum support level income must be below £16,845, partial support may be available on income up to £25,420), and the number of modules that you are studying. You must be studying the equivalent of at least 50% of a full time course.

     Course Grant 

    Part Time students may be eligible for a grant of up to £265 for course-related costs. The amount received is determined by your household income, full grant on income up to £26,029, partial grant on income up to £28,065.

    Access to Learning Fund  

    If you have unexpected financial problems while you are studying at University of Bolton you can apply for the Access to Learning Fund providing you have received the maximum support package from Student Finance England. This fund enables the University to provide selective help, on a discretionary basis, to students who are in extreme financial difficulty. As a registered student at Bolton, you can apply for financial assistance at any time during the academic year, once you have evidence of receiving the maximum Tuition Fee Grant and Course Grant, information on how to apply for this funding is made available to all new students.  

    Disabled Student's Allowance 

    Available for full time, part time, undergraduate and postgraduate students with disabilities. The Disabled Students Allowance helps with costs you incur when attending you course, as a direct result of your Disability.
