Full Time Undergraduates

This is a summary of the Student Support options available from September 2009.  

Tuition Fees

The Fees for a full time undergraduate degree course for the academic year of 2009/10 are £3,225.

Support from the Government 

If this is your first degree you will be eligible to apply for financial assistance from the government to help you fund your studies. Applications are made to Student Finance England, visit: www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance| to apply online or download the application form PN1. Eligibility and entitlement will be based on your household income. Below is a list of what is available.

Tuition Fee Loan

You are allowed to defer payment of the Tuition Fees until you have finished your course and are earning over £15,000. Full time students have the option of entering into an agreement with the Student Loans Company who will pay up to the amount of the overall cost of Tuition Fees. Repayments of the Tuition Fee Loan are made directly to the Student Loan Company.

Maintenance Grant 

A non repayable grant of up to £2,906 will be available to full time students. The amount received is based on household income. 

To receive the full £2,906 grant the household income must be below £25,000. 

To receive a partial grant the household income must be between £25,000 and £50,020. 

Student Maintenance Loan 

A student loan of up to £4,950 will be available for full time students studying at the University of Bolton. The maximum amount of loan that you are entitled is reduced if you are living at home with your parents, are in your final year, or are in receipt of the maintenance grant.  

Childcare Grant 

For full time students with dependant children in registered and approved childcare. A payment of up to 85% of actual childcare costs is available, (maximum £148.75 per week for one child and £255 per week for two or more children) dependant on household income. 

Parents' Learning Allowance 

For full time students who have dependant children. A payment of three instalments totalling a maximum of £1,508 a year is available, dependant on household income.  

Adult Dependants' Grant 

For full time students with adult dependants. A payment of three instalments totalling a maximum of £2,642 is available, dependant on household income. 

Disabled Student's Allowance 

Available for full time, part time, undergraduate and postgraduate students with disabilities. The Disabled Students Allowance helps with costs you incur when attending you course, as a direct result of your Disability. Information for European Union Students 

If you are a national of the European Union or a child of an EU National you may be entitled to some forms of student support dependent on your chosen course. For all EU students a Tuition Fee Loan is available. The application form is available at:

Financial Support from the University 

Support for your studies does not just stop at the government. The University also has financial awards that you may be entitled to if you are a U.K. student studying an undergraduate course at University of Bolton as follows: 

Bolton Bursary 

A tax free bursary of up to £350 per academic year. The Bursary is assessed on household income and is payable to student in two instalments in January and May. Students are eligible if their tuition fees are paid via tuition fee loan or they are self funded. 

To receive the full £350 bursary the household income must be below £39,333 

To receive a partial bursary the household income must be between £39,334 and £60,032. 

Bolton Scholarship 

This is a non means tested grant of £750 per academic year. Scholarships will be awarded to all UK undergraduate students, irrespective of their financial means, whose tuition fees are paid via tuition fee loan or are self funded and are studying a University of Bolton undergraduate higher education course having successfully completed an approved preparatory course or period of study at either: 

  • A partner institution who has entered into a Progression Accord with the University or the university itself.

Scholarships for students whose courses commence from September 2009: 

Excellence Scholarship 

The Excellence Scholarship of £500 per annum will be awarded to all full-time University of Bolton U.K. undergraduate students, irrespective of their financial means, who progress to a University undergraduate HE course having successfully accumulated a minimum of 300 UCAS points at A2 level or equivalent. 

Care Leavers Scholarship 

The Care Leavers Scholarship of £1,000 per annum will be awarded to full-time University of Bolton U.K. undergraduate students leaving a Care background, irrespective of their financial means, who progress to a University undergraduate HE course. 

Vice Chancellor's Award 

The Vice Chancellor's Award of £15,000 will be awarded to the most outstanding academically-gifted full-time University of Bolton U.K. undergraduate students, irrespective of their financial means, who progress to a University undergraduate HE course. The £15,000 award will be paid over the duration of the course of study. Students in receipt of this award will not be eligible to receive any of the other scholarships.

For all of the above awards tuition fees must be paid via tuition fee loan or students must be self funded in order to receive payment. 

Access to Learning Fund 

If you have unexpected financial problems while you are studying at University of Bolton you can apply for the Access to Learning Fund. This fund enables the University to provide selective help, on a discretionary basis, to students who are in extreme financial difficulty. As a registered student at Bolton, you can apply for financial assistance at any time, providing you have already taken out the maximum student funding offered, and information on how to apply for this funding is made available to all new students.
