The Enlighten Project has been running since January 2002 and seeks to empower the residents of five Bolton wards (Central, Derby, Farnworth, Halliwell, Tonge) by increasing their awareness of training and educational opportunities.
The project provides free:
-
Informal, friendly help and advice about education and careers
-
One-to-one support and mentoring to ensure project beneficiaries reach their full potential
-
Support with enrolment, form filling, attending open days and careers appointments
-
Information on the different routes to help beneficiaries decide the best type of learning for them - whether it be based in the community or studying for a degree
-
Confidence building
How does the project work?
-
People are contacted though community events by our multi-lingual outreach team or recommended by other friends, family and informal social networks
-
An initial informal interview is conducted to assess needs, which is written up by the project worker.
-
Initial advice is given and then if appropriate beneficiaries are signposted to other agencies’ services.
-
Beneficiaries are sometimes accompanied on appointments if they wish this
Enlighten delivers opportunities in a format that is sensitive to cultural, linguistic and gender issues. This enhances the take-up of opportunities by hard to reach groups, particularly ethnic minority women who have been identified by local research as a hard-to-reach group. It provides information / advice / guidance sessions in a culturally sensitive manner, in non-threatening community environments. The project will support identified beneficiaries in their chosen education route by providing individual mentoring services.
