Financial Support for students commencing September 2012

Full Time U.K. Undergraduates and PGDE/PDE students     

Tuition Fees 

Tuition fees for full-time undergraduate programmes of study will be charged in three bands at University of Bolton from the academic year 2012/13 (courses commencing from September 2012) depending how your course is taught, as follows:

 

 Band 1: Laboratory/specialist courses    £8,400 pa

 Band 2: Studio based/resource intensive courses £7,200 pa

 Band 3: Classroom-based courses £6,300 pa

 Band X: Partner college franchises   £5,100 pa

University of Bolton Fee Waivers 

All UK/EU undergraduate students whose household income is under £42,600 enrolling on Science, Engineering and Mathematics programmes in tuition fee Band 1 (£8,400), excluding Sport and Psychology courses, will be eligible for a fee waiver of £1,200 for each year of their course. 

Tuition Fees for PGDE/PDE courses 

Fees for full-time PGDE/PDE courses for the academic year of 2012/13 are yet to be confirmed, please refer to the University of Bolton website for the most up to date information. 

Financial Support available from the government 

If this is your first HE qualification you will be eligible to apply for financial assistance from the government to help you fund your studies. Applications are made online, visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance| to apply.

If you have studied at Higher Education level previously, this may affect the amount of funding available to you. Please check the Equivalent Level Qualifications and Previous Study sections at the end of the full time summary.

Eligibility and entitlement will be based on your household income. Below is a list of what is available.

Tuition Fee Loan 

Full time students have the option of taking out a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the cost of their fees. Fees will then be paid from the Student Loan Company direct to the university. Repayments of the Tuition Fee Loan are made to the Student Loan Company. You are allowed to defer payment of the Tuition Fees until you have finished your course and are earning over £21,000.

Student Maintenance Loan 

A student loan of up to £5,500 is available for full time students studying at University of Bolton. The maximum loan amount you are entitled to is reduced to £4,375 if you are living at home with your parents. Loan rates are also reduced when you are in your final year, or are receiving maintenance grant.  

Maintenance Grant 

A non repayable grant of up to £3,250 per annum will be available to full time students, subject to household income, for each year of their degree.

 

To receive the full £3,250 grant the household income must be below £25,000.

To receive a partial grant the household income must be between £25,001 and £42,600.

 

Full-time PGDE/PDE students may also be eligible to receive the maintenance grant subject to the above household income thresholds. 

Childcare Grant 

For full time students with dependent children in registered and approved childcare. A payment of up to 85%, up to a fixed threshold, of actual childcare costs is available. This award is dependent on household income, the amount of the award is yet to be determined. 

Parents’ Learning Allowance 

For full time students who have dependent children. This award is dependent on household income, the amount of the award is yet to be determined.

Adult Dependants’ Grant 

For full time students with adult dependents. This award is dependent on household income, the amount of the award is yet to be determined. 

Disabled Student’s Allowance 

The Disabled Students Allowance helps with costs you incur when attending you course, as a direct result of you Disability. You should contact the Disability Service for more information on the application procedure: 01204 903478. 

PGDE/PDE Bursary 

For PGDE/PDE Students only. A bursary, (amount yet to be determined), may be available. Eligibility for this bursary is dependant on the student training to teach a “shortage subject” as designated by the government. Not all subjects attract this bursary. For further information please contact:

Information for European Union Students 

If you are a national of the European Union or a child of an EU National you may be entitled to some forms of student support dependent on your chosen course. For all EU students a Tuition Fee Loan is available. The application form EU12N is available from:

National Scholarship Programme 

EU students may be eligible to receive a partial fee waiver through the National Scholarship Programme via the university in their first year of study only. 

 Eligibility 

 A pro-rata National Scholarship may be awarded to students who are studying highest cost, (Band 1), qualifying courses (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics, with the exception of Sport and Psychology) and whose household income is less than £25,000. 

The National Scholarship may also be awarded to students who are leaving a Care background and whose household income is less than £25,000.

Financial Support from the University for undergraduate students

 

Various additional awards for full-time U.K. University of Bolton undergraduate students are available as follows: 

National Scholarship Programme* 

  • Amount £3,000 to be paid for one year only, within your first year of study.
  •  Will be paid in three forms: 

 Fee waiver of £1,200 in year 1 of the course. 

 A range of benefits to the value of £800 to include for example reduced Halls of Residence fees, provision of specialist equipment, travel costs for study abroad.

 

A financial scholarship of £1,000 payable on successful completion of year 1 of their course of study.

 Eligibility 

 The National Scholarship may be awarded to students who are studying highest cost, (Band 1), qualifying courses (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics, with the exception of Sport and Psychology) and whose household income is less than £25,000.

 

 The National Scholarship may also be awarded to students who are leaving a Care background and whose household income is less than £25,000.

 

180 Scholarships will be available from University of Bolton in the  2012/13 academic year.

 

The University of Bolton Scholarship* 

£500 per annum will be awarded to all U.K. University of Bolton students whose household income is less than £25,000, progressing to a University of Bolton undergraduate Higher Education course with tuition fees higher than £6,000, who have successfully completed an approved preparatory course of study at:  

  • A partner institution which has entered into a Progression Accord with the University.
  • University of Bolton on an Access course.

  • To receive the full award in the first year, applicants must have firmly accepted the offer of a place at University of Bolton by 1 August for September entry or 1 January for February entry.
  •  The University of Bolton Scholarship is not available to students in receipt of the National Scholarship.
  • Vice Chancellor’s Award*

     

    The Vice Chancellor’s Award, of  up to £15,000, may be awarded to the most outstanding and academically-gifted, (minimum 360 UCAS points), full-time U.K. undergraduate students, irrespective of their financial means, who progress to a University of Bolton undergraduate higher education course. The award will be paid in instalments over the duration of the course.Please refer to the university website for full application details.

    Access to Learning Fund 

    If you have unexpected financial problems while you are studying at

    Bolton you can apply for the Access to Learning Fund. This fund enables the University to provide selective help, on a discretionary basis, to students who are in extreme financial difficulty. As a registered student at Bolton, you can apply for financial assistance at any time, providing you are have taken out the maximum student funding offered by Student Finance England.

Equivalent Level Qualifications

 

Please note for courses commencing from September 2009 or later, if you already have a Higher Education (HE) qualification from an institution in the U.K. or elsewhere in the world you will not be eligible for further student support under the ELQ regulations for a second equivalent or lower level HE qualification. This rule applies whether the previous qualification was:

 

  • Studied in the U.K. or elsewhere in the world
  • Self funded or publicly funded
  • Studied on a full-time, full-time distance learning, compressed or part-time basis 
  • Studied in a different subject to the course you are considering
  • Studied in the past however long ago

Funding for students whose courses or circumstances are in the exempt categories will be restricted to maintenance loan only plus supplementary grants

Previous study at Higher Education level

 

 Funding is available in general for the length of the course plus, if necessary, 1 extra year.

 Any period of funding within an academic year is classed as 1 whole year’s funding e.g. if you received funding for 1 semester, then suspended studies, the extra year would have been used up

 If you exceed 1 additional year, funding will be restricted at the beginning of the further study period

 Restricted funding is usually maintenance loan only, no tuition fee loan, no maintenance grant 

 

Part Time Undergraduate and PGDE/PDE Students

Support from the Government  

If this is your first part-time undergraduate or part-time PGDE/PDE course you may be eligible to apply for financial assistance from the government to help you fund your studies. Applications for funding can be made online at:

Tuition fee loan 

A non means tested tuition fee loan will be available for part-time students to cover up to 100% of tuition fees charged

 In order to access a tuition fee loan you must be studying at a rate of at least 25% of a full-time course

 Tuition fee loan will be repaid when you earn over £21,000.

 Repayments will commence from the April three years after you begin your course, but only if your earnings are over £21,000.

There are no living costs loans or grants for part-time students

 

Access to Learning Fund  

If you have unexpected financial problems while you are studying at University of Bolton you can apply for the Access to Learning Fund providing you have received the maximum support package from Student Finance England. This fund enables the University to provide selective help, on a discretionary basis, to students who are in extreme financial difficulty. As a registered student at Bolton, you can apply for financial assistance at any time during the academic year, once you have evidence of receiving the maximum government funding, information on how to apply for this funding is made available to all new students.

 

National Scholarship Programme 

Part-time students may be eligible to receive a partial fee waiver through the National Scholarship Programme, via the university, in their first year of study only.
