Access to Higher Education Diploma courses
Access courses are designed to prepare students for higher education. They are aimed at applicants who have been out of education for a while and assume no prior knowledge or qualifications. As well as increasing subject knowledge in the area of study, access courses help students develop essential study skills such as essay writing, exam technique, research methods as well as numeracy and IT skills.

Foundation years and semesters
A range of the undergraduate| courses offered by the University of Bolton have a foundation year or foundation semester option (sometimes referred to as balancing). The foundation elements of these courses allow students lacking the qualifications or experience to enter the first year of a degree, foundation degree or HND a way to gain the relevant skills and knowledge required to help them succeed in undergraduate-level study.

During the foundation year or semester students develop the essential study skills that are vital for success in higher education.
You can only apply for a foundation option as part of a degree or foundation degree. Foundation option students are considered undergraduate| students as they are enrolled on an undergraduate| course. Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art and Design)
