SPORT

Whether you’re a serious athlete or more of a casual sports fan, you’ll find exactly what you want in the University of Bolton’s £31million health and sports centre Bolton One.

University Sports Facilities

The University of Bolton is serious about sport. We offer a range of sports degrees, provide scholarships for athletes, and we’ve also invested £31million in Bolton One, our health and sports centre.

Whether you want to compete in leagues, play for fun, get fit, or just de-stress in a relaxed atmosphere, there is something for everyone at the Bolton One. Trained staff can show you how to use the indoor courts and the climbing wall. There is also a host of fitness classes including everything from Boxercise to Trampolining.

If you prefer the great outdoors, there’s a whole host of clubs to join and activities to try – from snowboarding to watersports. The beautiful Pennine Moors that surround Bolton are the perfect venue for walking, kayaking and horse riding.

As a student you’ll get special access to the sports facilities at Bolton One. This includes a 25m swimming pool, 15m climbing wall, competition-level trampoline, large sports hall and modern gym. You’ll also have the chance to use our Athlete Development Centre, which helps athletes, sports teams and coaches at all levels improve their performance, and our Sports and Spinal Injury Clinic is our physiotherapy and sports rehabilitation clinic open to everyone.

Student Sports Teams

University is a great time to discover new sports, or get even better at ones you already play. We have a huge range of student sporting societies, from rock climbing to mixed martial arts, hockey to quidditch!

Joining a sports team is a great way to make new friends, as well as letting off steam and staying healthy. You could even represent the University of Bolton in the inter-university BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) leagues, traveling around the country to play other universities. In the most recent season, the University of Bolton has been represented in men’s basketball, men and women’s football, men and women’s hockey, women’s netball, and men’s rugby union.

See the full range of sports clubs you can join when you arrive. And if you don’t see the sport you want, it’s very easy to set up a brand new club through the Students’ Union.

Sports in the Bolton Area

Bolton town is a great place to watch first-rate sports. The University of Bolton Stadium is the home of football team Bolton Wanderers FC, and the Bolton Arena regularly hosts indoor sporting events such as tennis and boxing.

The Bolton area has a huge number of facilities for playing sport, including the Lucozade Powerleague for five-a-side football, tennis courts at Bolton Arena, Jump Xtreme trampoline centre, the weekly 5k Bolton Parkrun, wrestling at the YMCA, and various cricket clubs. The UK’s longest indoor real snow slope, Chill Factore is also nearby for skiing and snowboarding.

Bolton’s location next to West Pennine Moors makes it the perfect base for visiting the great outdoors. West Pennine Moors is a beautiful area of wild moorland, and is ideal for walking running, cycling, and horse riding. West Pennine Moors also contain reservoirs where you can practice water sports such as sailing, kayaking and windsurfing.
