Adoption leave will give eligible employees the right to take leave when a child is newly placed for adoption. Adoption leave is available to:

Paid adoption leave is applicable to eligible employees
The University of Bolton holiday year runs from 1 September through to 31 August. All annual leave must be agreed locally between you and your line-manager prior to the leave being taken.
Annual leave for academic staff is 35 days
Annual leave for professional support staff is 26 days (five additional days are given on completion of five years’ service (the following September)
Annual leave for part-time and/or term-time staff and those commencing employment part way through the leave year is worked out on a pro-rata basis.
The university has a number of staff car parks (please refer to the visitors guide for locations). Car parking at the university car parks is on a first-come, first-served basis*. Your university staff ID card gives you access to the car parks. *There is also a park and ride type scheme available where staff can park at the University Halls of Residence where the car park is full.
The chaplaincy is a place where you will find a quiet room, prayer room and resource area as well as chaplains and pastoral assistants from different faiths, traditions and world views. The Chaplaincy is located within the Chancellor’s Mall.
Compassionate leave of up to five days, without loss of pay, is given on the death of an immediate family member: parent/guardian, brother/sister, child or spouse/partner/civil partner. Paid time off will also be granted to attend the funeral of other close relatives e.g. grandparents.
The Cycle scheme allows the member of staff to make savings on the cost of a new bicycle and associated safety equipment. The scheme allows you to save tax and national insurance contributions as the value of the vouchers is taken out of your salary before tax. Academic staff are allocated five days (which are not part of the annual leave entitlement) discretionary leave. Professional staff may be granted reasonable discretionary days, at their line-manager’s discretion, under exceptional circumstances.
The university offers emergency childcare provision for staff who may be in need of an emergency nursery place, childminder or nanny. It is an additional service, provided by Sodexho Pass, the Childcare Voucher provider.
The university has an Employee Lounge where staff can relax and re-charge their batteries. Staff are also encouraged to hold informal meetings here to encourage Schools and Departments to mix and interact with others from around the university. Free daily newspapers are available along with the opportunity to purchase food and drink (numerous special offers/discounts are available).
vivup (formerly known as amian) have been working with the University since 2011.
vivup can assist employees with personal issues and a telephone helpline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days per year. vivup provide completely confidential advice, support and information as well as telephone counselling and access to face to face counselling if required. The University will not be provided with the details of any staff who contact the service.
Employees can self-refer and any counselling that you may receive through this route general takes up to six sessions and will be paid for by the University. Counselling is provided in the Bolton area.

Staff increment up the pay spine of a grade (where applicable) in August, until the maximum scale point of a grade is reached. Staff must have been in post at 1 February in order to benefit from the increment the following August.
The Library aims to provide an academic information resource supporting the teaching, learning and research needs of the user community, in such a way as to achieve the highest professional standards in a cost effective and user-friendly manner. The Library issues you with a Staff ID card, which gives you access to Library Services and Car Parking.
Academics and professional services staff are honoured for their dedicated service to the university at the annual Long Service Awards (LSA).
The event takes place at the Octagon Theatre as part of the university’s annual Gala Evening. The awards are given to staff members who have worked at the university for 20 years or more.

The university has made available to staff Private Medical Insurance on a discounted, voluntary basis via AXA PPP Healthcare Limited. Details are available from Human Resources.
Overtime is payable to staff graded less than AC1/Grade 6 for hours in excess of 36.25 hours at time-and-a-half (or double-time on a Sunday). Time off in Lieu may be agreed as an alternative to payment for overtime hours worked. All overtime/time off in lieu must be agreed with your line manager.
Fathers are entitled to two-weeks off work after the birth of a child. The first week is paid on the basis of the employee’s weekly salary; the second week is paid on the basis of Statutory Paternity Pay.

The university has teamed up with Northern Rail to offer employees the opportunity to purchase an annual season ticket for rail travel.
The university will purchase the ticket on your behalf and you then pay the money back through monthly deductions from you salary.
The university hosts a number of special events throughout the year and staff are encouraged to participate and help promote good causes such as: Diversity Day, “An Evening With…”, Employability Week, Health Mela, International Week, TED-talks, Breakfast briefings, Annual Learning and Teaching Conference, Graduation and other religious services.

Staff, students and the wider community are welcomed and encouraged to use the Bolton Sport and Recreation Service located at Bolton One. Full details of classes, activities, costs etc are posted in the weekly all-staff bulletin or from reception at Bolton One.
The employee associated extends staff experiences by arranging and promoting social events (e.g. summer BBQ), benefits and discounts with the aim of enhancing staff wellbeing and promote a greater sense of community.
It is important that an initial PDP is drawn up at the commencement of the appointment, which is intended to focus on the support and training that will be provide during the probationary period and the anticipated level of development into their role that is expected will be achieved at the end of the period. The Vista – Meet & Eat is a hive of activity where you can meet friends and colleagues to relax after a busy day. Food and drink is available. The Vista hosts events such as Quiz Nights and private functions.

In unexpected circumstances where staff have exhausted their annual leave entitlement, staff are entitled to request unpaid leave. It is at the line manager’s discretion whether to recommend that approval for unpaid leave is granted by Human Resources.
