Matthew France

Lecturer

Matthew France is a lecturer in Retail Business Management he recently joined the Institute of Management following 25 years working in the retail industry for blue chip retailers such as Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Aldi in senior store management roles. He also has significant entrepreneurial experience setting up two businesses and being involved in other investments and start-ups. He brings a wealth of leadership and management experience in the retail sector leading large team in opening three new stores for Tesco and two custom designed warehouse facilities for Marks and Spencer. During his time in Tesco, he proudly developed teams and cultures that achieved outstanding commercial results in colleague surveys four of Matthew. Tesco stores were in the top ten stores in the country for colleague motivation and satisfaction. He also led the change programme for a group of 27 stores across the North West that delivered a step change in culture, customer service and satisfaction. Under his leadership, the group was the first superstores group in the North to achieve an excellent customer service rating from external customer surveys. Matthew has been a key part of the team that has developed a suite of undergraduate and post graduate retail qualifications and has led the work in designing a Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (Retail), which launches this September. He achieved his PGCert in Teaching in Higher Education in his first year and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Matthew is keen to develop his pedagogy to share his extensive commercial experience and academic knowledge.
