David Rudd

Emeritus Professor

Dr David Rudd is an emeritus professor at the University of Bolton, where he has worked, almost continuously, since 1983, when he was first appointed as a Tutor Librarian. He moved into the academic field after undertaking an MA in Communication Studies at Sheffield Hallam University. Out of this course came his first book, a study of Roald Dahl (A Communication Studies Approach to Children’s Literature, 1992). He then undertook a PhD examining the enduring popularity of Enid Blyton, which also became a book (Enid Blyton and the Mystery of Children’s Literature, 2000). Since then he has published Reading the Child in Children’s Literature (2013) and edited The Routledge Companion to Children’s Literature (2010), featuring many of the world’s expert scholars in the area. He has been on the board of most of the international journals in children’s literature and was the editor-in-chief of one of the longest-running of such periodicals, Children’s Literature in Education until he stood down in 2018. He also ran the UK Children’s Literature JISC discussion list from the 1990s until 2018. Overall, he has published over 100 articles in the field of children’s literature.

At the University of Bolton, aside from teaching in all areas of English for undergraduates, and on several courses for the Department of Education, he also established an MA in Children’s Literature, which ran for many years, and helped develop the postgraduate programme for Research students. Currently, he has supported some dozen students successfully through their PhDs.

In 2014 he was invited to become Professor of Children’s Literature at the University of Roehampton, London, where he also became Director of National Centre for Research in Children’s Literature. Health issues made him decide to retire from this post in 2016, restricting himself to his role as emeritus professor, supporting doctoral candidates.
