University of Bolton, why we are the right choice
Location - Bolton, Greater Manchester
01/11/2022
Students and staff from the University of Bolton joined with community members and councillors to brave the pouring rain to help clean up the streets around the town centre campus.
The University teamed up with Bolton Council to collect more than 80 bags of rubbish – and despite the terrible weather, more than 30 people turned up, including councillors Mudasir Dean, Nick Peel and Martin Donaghy.
Students’ Union President Nihit Tiwari, who helped to organise the initiative with the University’s Office of the Provost in collaboration with the council, said he was “delighted” with the turnout.
He said: “I am so pleased with how many people have come out today in these conditions. Students came along because they really wanted to make a difference to their community.”
The litter pick took place in and around the back streets off Deane Road close to the University main campus on Saturday 29 October.
Cllr Dean, who is Bolton Council's Executive Cabinet Member for Safer Communities said: "As a council, we work hard to keep the borough tidy and free from litter.
“We are grateful to those who give up their spare time to help keep Bolton litter free, it's great to see such strong community spirit.
"I would like to pay tribute to one of our key partners, the University of Bolton, which plays such an important role in this town. Well done to Nihit our Student Union president and Dr Zubair Hanslot, University Provost, for organising the event.
"We urge all residents to think twice before deciding to leave waste behind."
Cllr Peel, who is Leader of the Labour group on Bolton Council, said: “It is a brilliant turnout and it’s clear that despite the rain everyone is in good spirits and wants to help.
“I have always been a big believer that people should so do whatever they can to help their community and shouldn’t rely on others to clean up their streets – it is great that the University has got involved and organised this.”
