An exhibition of stunning artwork to celebrate more than 150 years of the University of Bolton’s School of Arts opened at Bolton Museum and Art Gallery on Friday, September 28 with many past and present students and members of staff in attendance. The exhibition covers a wide range of historic and current works, along with information about the University and town, demonstrating how the School of the Arts has altered and developed over the decades in response to the changes in Bolton’s economy and community. The prestigious Commemorative Show is a chance for the School of Arts to celebrate the remarkable achievements of graduates, staff and students. Sam Johnson, Head of the School, said she was delighted to see the gallery after everyone’s hard work setting it up. “It is fantastic and wonderful to be in partnership with the Museum and Art Gallery to show the amazing work that has gone on in the School of Arts.” Bolton School of the Arts has produced a host of successful alumni over the years who have been taught and encouraged by skilled and dedicated academic and technical staff. Among them is internationally-renowned textile artist, Michael Brennand-Wood who attended the School of Arts from 1969 to 1972. “Bolton was a fabulous place. The tutors were great and I pushed myself and learned a lot while I was there. It enthused you to be an artist.” Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University, Dr Kondal Reddy Kandadi, who also spoke to the assembled guests, who numbered more than 100, expressed his happiness for the launch. “Our School of Arts produces quite amazing work and it is great that it has this venue as a showcase.” The museum had agreed that the School of Art could have access to the gallery for four months of every year, to enable the university to host student work and other artists. The gallery is situated on the top floor, with the exhibition running until December 31.
