Our People

Ian Bowden

As a qualified Solicitor Advocate, I have many years of experience in the legal sector. These real-life legal skills help me to ensure that the university’s law programmes, cover the theoretical knowledge needed to succeed in the law but with a practical edge. This approach helps our students to place the theory from books and journals into everyday legal situations and helps to ensure that our successful law graduates can quickly adapt to working in legal settings.

In addition, as a qualified Solicitor, I have responsibility for supervising the University Pro-Bono scheme. This scheme provides learners with the chance to engage in a range of ongoing activities all designed to improve your knowledge of the law and your practical skills.

Testimonials

Very professional

Anonymous | 2019

"“I approached the advice centre with a fairly complex situation relating to professional negligence. I was initially contacted following the completion of their online enquiry form, I might add in a very timely fashion. After consideration of the basic details provided, a meeting was arranged with Mr Ian Bowden.

I met Mr Bowden to discuss the details and provided him with a large amount of paperwork. The meeting was relaxed but very professional. I was given a timescale as to when I would receive their advice and I was asked to provide further relevant information.

True to his word (not always the case when dealing with the legal profession) I received a detailed evaluation and recommendations. The advice was not what I was hoping for, but I have full confidence in it. I believe that this is a valuable service that will benefit our town. I have absolutely no reservation in recommending the advice centre to the people of Bolton and a big thank you to Mr Bowden for his expediency and professionalism.”"

"“The Legal Advice Centre at the University of Bolton came to my aid when I was at a very low ebb. I had a problem that was causing me enormous stress and financial hardship but I was crippled by indecision, uncertain of my rights and obligations.

The clear and constructive advice I received from the team at the Legal Advice Centre helped me chart a path through my problems. Knowing how not to make the situation worse took a great weight off my mind, and the creative solutions suggested gave me the confidence to move forward, safe in the knowledge that my choices were legally sound.”"

Credible and professional legal advice

Anonymous | 2019

"“This has been an amazing opportunity to seek advice and guidance from this new service. Ian’s professionalism and expert knowledge has been invaluable in giving me some clarity and direction in a very emotional and stressful time in my life.

Having been thrown into a situation whereby decisions needed to be made with little prior knowledge of the legal complexities involved, I have found this service and Ian to be so helpful in alleviating my worries and giving very practical, knowledgeable guidance with compassion and empathy.

Access to credible and professional legal advice is what I needed to make some key decisions and independently action some of these. I am extremely grateful to have been able to access this free of charge and given in such a timely and supportive way. Thank you.”"
