The International Foundation Programme has been created to help international students of engineering prepare for their degree programmes. As well as introducing you to engineering topics, it’s designed to improve your language skills, equip you with the academic skills you’ll need, and introduce you to higher education in the UK.
Award:
FndCert
Mode of Study:
Full-time
Duration:
1 year
Location:
The University of Bolton
Start date:
To be confirmed
Our International Foundation Programme (Engineering) is designed to introduce you to a new study culture, build a solid understanding of key concepts and practices in engineering, and help you develop your English skills. You’ll benefit from teaching that’s interactive, and has a strong focus on communication and group working. This way, you don’t just learn from your tutors, but also from your fellow students as you collaborate and support each other’s progress. Studying in a foreign country is a great opportunity, and can be a really positive life-changing experience. It can be a challenge too, so we’re here to provide you with wide-ranging support and encouragement to help you make the most of your time living and studying in what might be a whole new cultural experience, and an academic approach you’re not familiar with.
This course covers the key areas from the first year of an undergraduate degree programme in engineering, so if you complete it successfully, you’ll be ready to consider full undergraduate study – having familiarised yourself with the academic language and study skills required.
Classes on this course are taught and run by specialist English for Academic Purposes (EAP) lecturers and expert tutors from the University of Bolton's engineering department.

Where changes are made to material information contained in this course description or a decision is taken to suspend a course between the offer of admissions and enrolment, we will inform applicants at the earliest possible opportunity and will outline the various options available to the applicant.
If you complete this International Foundation Programme (Engineering) successfully then you’ll be in a position to apply for an approved engineering-related undergraduate degree at the University of Bolton, or strengthen your career prospects in engineering-related fields.

You’ll experience a range of teaching approaches on this course, and we’ll help you develop the study and learning strategies that best support you as you acquire and develop your engineering knowledge, language and academic skills.
Each module will have a practical focus, and timetabled sessions will allocate time to tuition, group work and assignment/IT workshops. Each week, we offer 20 hours of tuition, including workshops or seminars, plus an hour’s academic tutorial to support you with assignments. Our teaching approach places emphasis on facilitation, whereby your tutor will guide and support you as you complete a variety of tasks.
In tutorial sessions, you’ll receive detailed and constructive feedback on your progress, and we’ll help you find your own strategies for successfully completing the course. In addition, you’ll have access to our virtual learning environment – a website with a wide range of additional learning materials, interactive content and support resources.
Assessments don’t just include written exams and assignments but also portfolios of work which you’ll work on independently with advice from teachers, giving you the opportunity to improve your work throughout the course. You’ll also be expected to deliver presentations and participate in discussions with regular feedback from your teachers to help you. One-to-one discussions between teacher and student are also a very important feature of the programme where you’ll have the opportunity to discuss progress and raise any concerns about your studies.
The modules listed below may be a mixture of compulsory and optional. You may not have the opportunity to study all the modules shown as part of the course.
