There is a national shortage of mathematics teachers and mathematics graduates are popular with employers in industries across the economic spectrum – this course is designed to open doors to a multitude of careers. Our BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Secondary Education offers you a firm grounding in pure and applied mathematics, the skills needed to solve mathematical problems arising in real-life, and practical teaching skills that are grounded in theory. If you are looking to teach mathematics at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 (11-18 years), this degree provides highly relevant knowledge and experience that should prove attractive to free schools, academies and independent schools.

During the first level of the course, our dedicated tutors will support you to consolidate and develop your knowledge of mathematics beyond A-level. You’ll also have the opportunity to gain valuable preparatory knowledge and understanding of the role of a teacher in secondary education. At the second level, you’ll focus on deepening your knowledge and understanding of mathematics and begin to develop your teaching skills via school-based experience.

At Honours-level, you’ll explore the key theories and techniques of teaching, learning and assessment. We’ll support you as you discover how to apply them in practice, and encourage you as you learn to plan lessons, deliver classes, assess your students’ performances and provide constructive feedback. Our supportive tutors will work to help you become an expert, engaging and inclusive mathematics teacher with high standards of professionalism.

Please note, that we are unable to recommend graduates of this degree for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which is awarded by the UK government’s Department for Education (DfE). However, a range of educational establishments in England are not required to stipulate QTS as a condition of employment. These include independent schools, free schools, studio schools, academies and university technical colleges. With appropriate experience, you’ll be able to achieve QTS via the Assessment Only (AO) route. Alternatively, you could pursue QTS by undertaking one of the available graduate teacher training routes.

  • This three-year programme offers you the opportunity to combine gaining a significant amount of teaching experience with achieving an Honours degree in a highly respected and versatile subject.
  • We’ll support you to gain the skills and knowledge needed to teach mathematics at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 (11-18 years), preparing you to gain employment as a teacher in a non-state school. Once you have gained several years’ teaching experience in two or more educational establishments, teaching at least two consecutive age ranges, you’ll be eligible to seek Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to teach in state-maintained schools via the Assessment Only (AO) route (correct as at October 2018). Alternatively, you’ll be well-placed to apply for a graduate teacher training programme that leads to QTS.
  • Work-based learning through a teaching placement is an essential part of the course and you’ll have the opportunity to gain a minimum of 120 days experience planning and delivering learning in schools.

Professional recognition
We are seeking accreditation of our BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Secondary Education degree from the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). The course is designed to partially fulfil the requirements for Chartered Mathematician (CMath) status. Please note, this course does not lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which is required to teach in state-maintained schools.

  • 104 UCAS points. Please see our guide to the UCAS Tariff for examples of how to achieve these points.
  • Your Level 3 subjects must include mathematics; for instance, A-level Mathematics or IMA Polymaths Certificate (with a score of at least 900 out of 1200 points).
  • You should also have five GCSEs at grade C or above or grade 4 to 9 (or equivalent) including English.
  • If you don’t meet the entry requirements for this course please consider our Polymaths course.
  • You’ll be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.
  • This course involves working unsupervised with children and/or vulnerable young people and adults and you must gain an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before starting your studies. Charges are payable to cover the cost of the DBS Enhanced Disclosure application and annual registration with the online Update Service.

The course offers a grounding in mathematics, and examines how this can support a career in education and school-based experience.

However, as a graduate of this degree you will not be limited to a career in education. The course is also designed to provide an excellent foundation for any career that requires a high level of mathematical knowledge and skill, and offers you the opportunity to gain transferable skills such as planning, time management, team work, communication, problem solving, analytical and modelling skills, research and self-discipline.

What can I do with this qualification?

This degree offers you an exciting opportunity to turn your passion for mathematics in to a career in teaching. As a graduate of this course, you’ll be well equipped with both the subject knowledge and the necessary pedagogical skills for teaching mathematics at secondary level.

After graduation, you’ll be eligible to apply for teaching posts where you’re employed directly by the school; for example, academies, free schools, independent schools and colleges, studio schools and university technical colleges. At present (October 2018), you’ll be eligible to seek Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to teach in state-maintained schools via the Assessment Only (AO) route once you have achieved several years’ teaching experience in two or more educational establishments, teaching at least two consecutive age ranges. Alternatively, you’ll be able to pursue QTS by completing a PGCE (Secondary) course, a school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT) programme or School Direct programme.

Alternatively, after graduation you may wish to study for a postgraduate qualification in education or a related social science to develop your understanding of the theory, research and policy of education.

The fees for a student’s course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

We take a blended approach to teaching and learning, using a combination of face-to-face sessions, electronic resources and communications, and school-based experience. You can expect timetabled lectures, along with tutorials and problem classes, seminars where we’ll encourage you to present your ideas, and meetings with your personal tutor. Guided independent study and self-directed learning are equally essential to your success; for instance, library research and background reading, preparing for practical activities and working on projects. As you progress you’ll be expected to demonstrate the ability to study independently and manage your own study.

Personal tutoring will help to support you throughout the course. We endeavour to be available and approachable, and encourage you to talk with us informally whenever you need support or guidance.

Formal assessment will be by examination, timed in-class tests, assignments, presentations, dissertation and oral viva. Additional formal assessment will be based on coursework. You’ll be expected to produce written work that demonstrates your understanding and ability to apply the course content. You’ll also receive informal peer and tutor feedback on individual and group activities. Your tutor will guide you towards areas of appropriate research and background reading.

We’ll arrange a school placement for you that will support you to gain the experience required to become a teacher in the non-state secondary education sector. During your placement, your teaching practice will be assessed according to Ofsted guidelines alongside the professional standards for teachers set by the Department for Education (DfE) and documented through session planning, observation reports and reflective journals. You’ll receive informal feedback on your performance, to help you assess your progress and improve your practice, as well as formal assessment that will contribute to your overall grade for the course.
