This master’s degree is part of a suite of professional development courses offered by the University of Bolton that cover contemporary issues and the latest emergent trends in education and health. The MA in Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education aims to support your professional development and carries considerable weight as a recognition of high professional standards. Throughout the course you’ll draw from and focus upon your work-based experiences as the basis of your studies, using your knowledge, practice and professional enquiry skills. In addition to developing your expertise in your chosen educational context, you’ll have the opportunity to relate this to your own setting so you can address areas of concern and development needs in an informed manner.

Professional recognition

  • Normally, you’ll have at least an upper second class (2.1) honours degree (or equivalent).
  • You must have current relevant employment and for the two specialist modules you'll need the expressed support of an organisational line manager and a mentor in the workplace.
  • You must be currently teaching as you’ll need to critically reflect on your experience and relate theory to practice.
  • Your application form must be accompanied by a 250-word reflective statement.
  • Two academic references highlighting your potential to produce master’s level (level 7) academic work will be required, as well as a reference on headed paper from your current/most recent employer that clearly shows the length of your employment and a breakdown of your roles and responsibilities within the education/training organisation.
  • We'll also consider applications where appropriate work experience can be demonstrated in lieu of, or in addition to, the published academic qualifications in line with the University’s Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) procedures.
  • We may wish to interview you as part of the application process.

This course is designed to support your professional development as a practitioner in the education and health sectors. It aims to give you an understanding of the principles and practice of effective teaching, including planning, assessment evaluation, curriculum development and the professional ethics of teaching and learning. It offers key transferable skills such as how to deal with complex issues within the learning environment, analytical skills, and the ability to evaluate research concerning childhood theory and its links to the curriculum.

What can I do with this qualification?

This course is designed to support your career progression; for instance, through a specialist curriculum or pastoral role, or by moving into management. As a graduate, you may seek to become a head of department, head of year or coordinator of a cross-curricular area, such as special needs or careers education, or a subject or professional mentor for trainee teachers on placement.

Alternatively, you could take on additional responsibility as a leading practitioner, in which you would share excellent classroom practice, knowledge and expertise with colleagues in their own schools, colleges and other institutions. There are also some opportunities for self-employment, which include private tutoring, writing educational materials or running a small private school.

Useful information

Please note, the total course fee for a Home student starting this course in 2020/21 will be £5,400. As this is an 18 month course, the fees are £3,600 for the first year and £1,800 for the final semester.

The fees for a student’s course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

The university is currently awaiting government guidelines as to EU fee charges for students commencing study in 2021/2022.

This course is designed to help you develop and build on your current knowledge and experience as an education practitioner. Experience and practice underpinned by informed research are valued and drawn upon throughout. You’ll be expected to build a collaborative learning relationship with your peers to exchange ideas, discuss relevant issues relating to your practice and explore areas for development.

A wide variety of teaching and learning strategies will be used on this course. These may include lectures, presentations, seminars, workshops, collaborative discussion and group work, debates and tutorials. You can also expect a range of assessment methods, such as essays, reports, presentations, portfolios and course work.
