Our IAB brings together a diverse range of professionals and organisations from a wide variety of construction and surveying related specialisms.
  • Coupling learning in key traditional areas such as construction management, architectural technology, building surveying and quantity surveying with the chance to gain expertise in current and emerging digital technologies, this unique course seeks to prepare you to start your career immediately after graduation while future-proofing your skills and knowledge so that you’re ready to adapt as the industry evolves.
  • We’ll cover recent innovations such as 3D laser scanning for reality capture and drone photogrammetry for surveying, and consider probable further developments in building design and management software, and building information modelling (BIM). The BSc (Hons) Digital Construction and Surveying programme aims to prepare you for a career in a number of possible sectors in the civil engineering and construction industry. Construction has long supply chains, including clients, consultant designers, contractors, sub-contractors, suppliers and manufacturers. There is increasing emphasis on the need for these supply chains to collaborate with each other, and digital techniques are key tools to support successful outcomes.

You’ll have the skills and knowledge to coordinate and lead teams, keep staff safe, plan the best use of resources, project manage the work of contractors, and respond appropriately to emergencies or urgent issues. In addition to subject-specific knowledge and skills, you’ll possess abilities in problem-solving, analysis and research, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, as well as commercial awareness.

What can I do with this qualification?

On successful completion of the course, you’ll have a sound understanding of best practice in the design and delivery of both smaller and flagship infrastructure schemes. After graduation, you’ll be ready to take on technical and management roles on diverse schemes such as commercial buildings and office blocks, industrial facilities and factories, and housing and multi-storey flats.

You'll be able to work for large multi-national companies, but also any of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the industry. There are many opportunities in construction to work in international locations (for example, in the Middle-East or Australia) as well as huge demand for digital skills in the North West and elsewhere in the UK.

You may also choose to continue your studies at postgraduate level with a master's degree or PhD.

Course fees

The fees for a student’s course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

The university is currently awaiting government guidelines as to EU fee charges for students commencing study in 2022/2023.

For 2022/2023 entry, the maximum government approved undergraduate tuition fee for UK students is £9,250 per year. The University is able to charge this fee subject to an approved Access and Participation Plan for 2022/2023 and its current rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework.

Digital construction and surveying is a diverse and multi-faceted discipline, so we use a wide range of teaching and learning methods. We have a sophisticated range of land surveying equipment and computer hardware/software. There is a blended approach to our delivery. We provide traditional timetabled lectures, seminars, computer workshops, practical sessions and tutorials. We'll support this with on-line learning material on the University's virtual learning environment called ‘Moodle’, so that you may learn at a time to suit yourself.

Our friendly and supportive tutors will be here to guide you. You'll have direct one-to-one access to them; they will know your first name and invite you for individual support sessions as you may feel necessary. Tutors will gladly help you to devise an independent study regime focused on your individual development needs.

You’ll be expected to devote significant time to independent and self-directed study. For example, background reading, revisiting practical work, attending lectures and technical meetings provided by professional bodies, preparing for seminars, working on assignments and revising for exams will support your timetabled learning and help develop good habits for lifelong learning.

Assessment will involve a strategic blend of practical work, exams, essays, presentations, laboratory write-ups and other assignments. Some assessments will contribute to your final module marks, while others are designed to help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, and where you need to seek extra support from course tutors.
