Course Details

Our BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering (Site Management Degree Apprenticeship) is aimed at those who are committed to developing their career in this challenging and exciting industry. The course has been informed by employers and is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). This degree incorporates the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the Level 6 Civil Engineering Site Management (ST0042) so your staff can learn to design and manage civil engineering and infrastructure projects.

Your apprentices will spend 80% of their time at work and 20% at the University, usually on a day-release basis. Study at the University of Bolton complements learning in the workplace, supporting your apprentices as they learn to undertake the tasks and responsibilities of civil engineering site management. Offering a solid foundation in the fundamental scientific and mathematical principles underpinning civil engineering, this course can prepare apprentices for higher-level responsibilities within your organisation. Our expert team will support them as they learn to ensure site safety, project efficiency and productivity, and that projects are completed to the specification, quality and within cost and contract constraints. We’ll guide your apprentices, helping them gain skills in logical thinking, problem-solving, communication and teamwork, as well as a focus on environmental impact and sustainability.

Professional recognition

The University of Bolton’s BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), which includes the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) and the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) under licence from the Engineering Council, as:

1) fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and

2) partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). A programme of accredited further learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.

Successful apprentices will also be awarded the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering from the University of Bolton and a degree apprenticeship certificate from the relevant awarding body.

  • The applicant’s Level 3 subjects must include mathematics and a science subject; for instance, A-level Mathematics and Physics or BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering or Construction (with units in additional mathematics and analytical subjects such as structural mechanics or environmental science).
  • Applicants should also have five GCSEs grade C or above or grade 4 to 9 (or equivalent) including English, Mathematics and Science.
  • We’re happy to consider applicants with non-traditional entry qualifications provided they can demonstrate relevant experience or a suitable portfolio of work that is deemed a reasonable substitute for the above qualifications. We'll consider such applications in line with the University’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) procedures.
  • Admission to this programme is only available to candidates who meet the following criteria. 1) They are employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a role relevant to the apprenticeship. 2) They have the right to live and work in the UK. 3) Their employer is participating in the Degree Apprenticeship scheme. 4) Their employer is willing to sponsor them to attend the University one day per week (times and dates to be determined). Please note that an apprentice cannot be self-employed.
  • If an applicant doesn’t possess GCSEs in English and Mathematics at grade C or above or grade 4 to 9, or hold an equivalent such as Functional Skills Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy, they will be asked to complete initial assessments for English and mathematics. The results of these assessments will determine whether they are accepted on to the apprenticeship with their current qualifications, or a recommendation of delayed entry is made so they can undertake studies enabling them to achieve the required level of English and mathematics prior to commencing the apprenticeship.
  • Applicants may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.

  • To be eligible for tuition fee funding through the Apprenticeship Levy, candidates should not normally have already completed a qualification at the same level as the proposed apprenticeship, unless that qualification was gained in a completely unrelated discipline.

The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering (Site Management Degree Apprenticeship Route) programme is designed to meet the Civil Engineering Site Management Degree Apprenticeship Standard (ST0042) and supports students to achieve the technical knowledge required for a career as a civil, structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, or highway and transportation engineer. Successful apprentices will be well qualified for careers in civil engineering site management and to take on roles such as site manager, sub-agent, assistant site manager or section engineer.

In addition to subject-specific knowledge and skills, apprentices will have the opportunity to develop transferable skills that include problem-solving, analytical and research skills, critical thinking, creativity, communication, teamwork, and commercial awareness.

What can I do with this qualification?

Graduate apprentices from this programme should be well prepared to progress their career in the construction industry, as well as for roles in the wider business, management and financial sectors. Recent BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering graduates from the University of Bolton have been employed by civil and structural engineering practices, local authorities, government agencies and civil engineering contractors.

This degree apprenticeship aims to support the development of the next generation of civil engineers with a strong focus on site management. On successful completion of the end point assessment, apprentices will be well prepared to take on demanding roles working on buildings of all kinds and transport or communication infrastructures, both in the UK and overseas. This could include bridges, roads, tunnels, canals and other large constructions, as well as projects for the production, storage and distribution of electricity, gas and water.

Graduate apprentices may choose to continue their training in civil engineering in order to achieve the professional standards to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng). They might also choose to study a postgraduate MSc Civil Engineering to further develop their general skills and knowledge or build specialist knowledge in a particular area, such as water management, earthquake engineering, maritime civil engineering and environmental engineering.

Apprentices will need to be employed by your organisation for a minimum of 30 hours per week. Your organisation will also need to commit to sponsoring apprentices to complete this qualification.

Useful information

Apprentices will not be expected to pay tuition fees towards this programme. If your organisation has a wage bill of more than £3 million per annum, then it may be able to fund this Degree Apprenticeship through its Apprenticeship Levy contributions. If your organisation does not pay the levy, it may be eligible for government support to fund apprenticeships. This support, called co-investment, covers 95% of the apprenticeship’s tuition fees with your organisation funding the remaining 5% of the fees.

Important note regarding tuition fees for the 2021/2022 academic year: EU nationals who meet residency requirements (have settled or pre-settled status) may be eligible for ‘Home’ fee status. If you do not meet these residency requirements, overseas fees will apply. Irish citizens living in the UK or Ireland will be eligible for ‘Home’ fee status under the Common Travel Area arrangement. Please read the student finance eligibility 2021/2022 policy on www.gov.uk for information.

The fees for a student’s course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

Civil engineering is a diverse and multi-faceted discipline, so we use a wide range of teaching and learning methods. These are designed to fully engage apprentices, helping them to develop the skills, knowledge, self-awareness and behaviours essential to become an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), with particular reference to your organisation and their place within it. Learning focuses on your workplace environment and builds the transferable body of knowledge and skills demanded to achieve IEng status, and apply this expertise within your organisation. Your apprentices will spend approximately 80% of their time in the workplace, with the other 20% of their time being devoted to off-the-job training and university learning.

As well as attending timetabled lectures, seminars, workshops, practical sessions and tutorials, apprentices will also be expected to allocate significant time to independent and self-directed studies. For example, background reading, revisiting practical work, attending lectures and technical meetings provided by professional bodies, preparing for seminars, working on assignments and revising for exams will support their timetabled learning and develop good habits for lifelong learning. Our friendly and supportive tutors will be here to guide them, and will gladly help them devise an independent study regime focused on their individual development needs. Learning will also be supported by the University's virtual learning environment, Moodle.

Your organisation will need to provide each apprentice with a workplace mentor to support their development. They will also benefit from regular visits from a University tutor. The workplace mentor, University tutor and apprentice will work together to create the individual learning plan required to progress the apprentice’s professional body membership. An individual learner record (ILR) will be completed on a monthly basis.

For the degree element of this programme, we assess each apprentice’s individual performance through a strategic blend of practical work, exams, essays, presentations, laboratory write-ups and other assignments. Some assessments contribute to their final module marks, while others are designed to help them identify their strengths and weaknesses, and where they need to seek extra support from course tutors. In addition to the assessments associated with the degree programme, apprentices will undertake the two-stage end point assessment, at the end of the apprenticeship period. Stage 1 is a written report and stage 2 comprises a presentation, interview and written examination.
