A placement can offer a range of valuable benefits to our students and needs to be able to:
- Provide a student with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills gained in the classroom
- Enable the student to learn about working life and the working environment
- Encourage students to meet new challenges and assume some responsibilities
- Broaden the student’s horizon
- Enhance the student’s knowledge of business practice and the business environment.
What is the definition of work experience?
- Summer internship (usually lasting between eight and twelve weeks)
- Easter/Christmas internship (typically two – four weeks in duration)
- 12 month work placement (can be paid work which is part of a students’ four year course or can be undertaken outside of their three year degree course i.e. a voluntary year out)
- Work based project (a specific piece of assessed work linked to an academic School)
- Work shadowing (lasting for two – three days/weeks in length and generally unpaid)
- Part-time work
- Voluntary work (working for a ‘not for profit organisation’ unpaid)
How to get the right person?
- You need to think through what you want a student to do – will you require specialist skills and experience?
- Be explicit about your needs and be clear about the tasks and objectives you expect them to achieve. This will help to keep the placement on track and provides a good platform for future evaluation.
- Involve them in the same recruitment and selection process as any other employee. This will help you to choose the right candidate for the role.
Ensuring a successful work placement
To ensure that both you and the student benefit from the work placement the following checklist needs to be given careful consideration:
- Ensure the job is coherent, with thought through projects, not just a series of unrelated tasks
- Develop a clear role description and person specification that is sufficiently challenging
- Define responsibilities and key tasks
- Determine the skills required
- Design an appropriate induction
- Allocate a supervisor/line manager for the student from the outset
- Build in an evaluation process
Offering a placement and work experience
Undergraduate work experience generally takes place in the holiday periods or on a temporary basis agreed between the student and your organisation. Summer placements usually last for approximately eight weeks starting in July.
International students can undertake a course related work experience placement or internship from a UK employer, provided it is approved by the university, and it does not take up more than 50% of the total duration of the course.
