We are here to help you make effective career decisions, and to ensure you make the best use of your opportunities. You don’t need to know what you want to do before you contact us. Remember, we can help you at whatever stage you’re at.
The Careers Advisers are here to:
- Direct you to relevant careers information about jobs, employers and opportunities
- Help you with your job search techniques and strategies
- Help you to use the IT facilities to help with career-based research
- Provide one-to-one support to enable you to explore your future career path
A Careers Adviser is not there to make a decision for you, complete your CV or job application or give any sort of legal advice. What they will do is direct you to the relevant information or source of further support if needed.
A guidance interview can last up to 45 minutes, and is available for students and graduates to discuss career options and goals, investigate specific career ideas and explore courses of action. The interview will be undertaken with a qualified adviser. If you think you need a longer amount of time, then please let us know and we will be happy to book you a longer slot.
During the interview
The Careers Adviser may take notes. This will be used to help provide a summary of the discussion, and to plan your next steps. We will also keep a copy of these notes for our records, and in-line with GDPR; you may ask at any time to see the information we have under your name.
Our Careers Advisers are available throughout the week Monday to Friday for one-one appointments. To book an appointment, either pop into the careers office or call us on +44 (0)1204 903 080.
If you can’t make your appointment
If you can’t make your appointment or you’re running late please notify us as soon as possible by calling +44 (0)1204 903 080. If you’re more than ten minutes late we might not be able to see you and may request that you re-book for another appointment.
If you can’t get to campus
You can still access our guidance services over the phone or via e-guidance.
All our appointments can be conducted over the telephone or via Skype (with notice), you will be called at the arranged time. During the course of the telephone appointment, you may be directed to websites or other resources, so access to a computer and/or pen and paper during the conversation is essential. If you have any supplementary documents you wish the adviser to look at, please send these to us in advance of the appointment.
If you are unable to call into the office or make an appointment then you can always email your queries and questions to our Careers Adviser team. This can be done by logging onto the Student Hub. Please be aware that depending on the nature of your enquiry, the Careers Adviser may recommend a face-to-face meeting.
