Still not applied to university? Here’s a look at why a smaller university might be the best fit for your studies.
Does a big university or a smaller, tight-knit university appeal to you more? Knowing how to choose the right university can make all the difference to your experience as a student.
The University of Bolton is a fantastic size, with around 8,000 students and impressive university rankings. We’ve been a Top 6 UK University for Teaching Quality in The Times Good University Guide* for three years running. Also for the past four years, our students have voted us No.1 for Student Satisfaction in the North West.**
So there’s nowhere better to enjoy life at university, and there’s still time to apply! See our Clearing website for available courses.
Here are some of the reasons why a smaller university like ours could suit you better:
Get more support from course leaders
Knowing how to choose the right university starts with knowing what’s important to you, and what you want from your experience as a student. While big universities are great, it can often be harder to connect with lecturers and heads of department.
One of the best reasons to apply to the University of Bolton is to take advantage of our small class sizes. By keeping study groups manageable, course leaders ensure you get all the attention and personalised support you need.
Our teaching staff provide one-to-one mentorship and will get to know you, and your career goals, tailoring the programme to nurture your personal and professional development.
You can make friends easily
Life at university can seem scary when you’ve never been away from home, and one of the biggest fears is whether you’ll make lots of friends.
Joining a tight-knit community where students get to be viewed as an individual (not just another student number) means having more opportunities to meet people, from all walks of life.
With fewer students, it becomes easier to recognise names and faces, and there will be plenty of chances to mingle. As well as getting friendly with people on your course, one of the best ways of meeting new people is by joining a club or society.
Get settled and find your feet quicker
As well as finding it easier to make friends, a smaller university like ours is a good option if you are easily overwhelmed by big city life. Getting settled in and finding your way around won’t be a problem on a smaller campus, and university services and facilities are always within reach.
Having everything in closer range makes life at university much easier to manage. Plus, a lot of students feel safer when they are on a campus they feel familiar with and are able to navigate the local area without trouble.
What’s the best university for me?
So many prospective students ask, “What’s the best university for me?” and are unsure of the answer. Our advice is not to stress too much about this. Any university experience can be a good one, and it’s really up to you to consider your personal learning style.
But if you value those deeper connections, thrive when there’s a sense of community, and want your life at university to be relaxed and as comfortable as possible, a smaller campus could be the best bet.
Larger institutions sometimes offer a greater variety of courses, but small universities can offer fantastic degree options too and can have excellent local employer connections.
You’ll also have more freedom in the curriculum, meaning you can hone in on your specialist skills and carve your dream career path. So there are plenty of reasons to choose a small or medium sized university like the University of Bolton!
Our courses still have spaces available so don’t delay! To apply through Clearing 2021, head over to our Clearing website.
