What Skills do you Need to Study Medical Biology?

If you’re looking to take your first steps into the world of Medical Biology and are wondering what skills you might need, then we’ve got you covered. We’re going to be looking at some of the key skills that will benefit you the most in your studies.

1. Teamwork
Firstly, we are starting with teamwork – in the field of Medical Biology you are often going to be working and collaborating with others, whether that is in a practical or more research focused environment. Your colleagues will often look to you for advice and help with their projects and work, so being able to collaborate and work effectively with others is a key part of being a great asset to the team.

2. Problem Solving
In Medical Biology you will often be faced with situations that are either new to you or hard to diagnose – there will be times where your ability to think abstractly and draw upon your knowledge will be the key factor in your success. Being able to take all the available information and come up with an effective solution to an issue will not only help you in your career in the field, but in your studies as well.

3. Discipline
Having discipline in the world of Medical Biology is something that will be incredibly useful, both in work and study environments – research and understanding will often be a key resource for you but achieving the level of understanding of your chosen subject area will take time and discipline to study and learn. Discipline will be a very advantageous skill to have during your studies at university as your ability to research in your own time will put you in a much stronger position when it comes to absorbing course material.

4. Attention to Detail
Having attention to detail is something that you will always benefit from, especially if you can build it into a habit. The world of scientific research is filled with intricate and often very subtle changes in data which help guide your research – the ability to be vigilant and have a keen eye for those details is a skill that you can never have too much of.

5. Self-reliance
On the other side of the coin to your skills in teamwork, it is also important to be self-reliant, both for your studies and your career. The more you can achieve when you are alone, the less you will need to rely on people and the faster you will be able to work. Being self-assured and having confidence will always be a useful skill to have in Medical Biology as there will be times where tasks and projects are left to you and you alone - you will need to know that you can rely on yourself to get the job done well.

There are a lot more skills that will benefit you in your studies and career, but if you think you have the skills above, or even want to work on improving them, then take a look at the University of Bolton’s Medical Biology course, based in Greater Manchester, and see what your future might hold.
