University of Bolton pledges to donate five students’ tuition fees to help overseas disaster victims

The University of Bolton has pledged to donate the fees of five students to charities that help the victims of three countries stricken by natural disasters. Professor George E Holmes DL, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton, made the offer after a charity event for Aghosh UK and the Alkhidmatand Foundation.

The charities have been raising money to help rebuild after the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, and floods in Pakistan. The event to raise funds took place at the British Muslim Heritage Centre on the 10 March. The University promised to donate all the first year’s fees collected from five people, who were present at the event that choose to enrol for a course at the University of Bolton in September 2023. This was also confirmed by the organisers. Professor Holmes said: “The University of Bolton is committed to helping communities. We are embedded in our local community and our student population is incredibly diverse and inclusive. “However, our reach also extends globally with a campus in Dubai and centres in Africa and we are passionate about being a force for good around the world, as well as locally and nationally.” The Chairman of Masjid-e-Bilal, Mr Mohammad Habeebullah OBE JP said: “This is an incredibly generous gesture by the University of Bolton. “The Vice Chancellor Professor Holmes is a great champion for disadvantaged communities and this donation will make a real difference to people who have been left with nothing after being affected by the most appalling catastrophes.” Professor Zubair Hanslot, Provost of the University of Bolton, said: “We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and we were moved by the generosity of the people willing to help those affected by the recent natural disasters in Turkey, Syria and Pakistan.

“The offer is open only to those that were present on the evening. It means if all the students enrolling have international status, there could be a donation from the University of Bolton of up to approximately £75,000.”

According to organisers, more than £150,000 was pledged during the event, as well as the offer from the University of Bolton.
