Teaching in Higher Education: Things you Need to Know

Is teaching in higher education right for you? Is a master’s the best move for your career? Here’s everything you need to know about training and working in higher education jobs…

If you’ve completed your PgCert in Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education, you can top up your degree with the University of Bolton’s MA Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education (Advanced Standing) course.

These programmes are designed to take your skills to the next level, preparing you for teaching at university level. But is teaching in higher education jobs the best pathway for you?

Here are some important things you need to know about this career path.

It’s highly rewarding

One of the biggest advantages of becoming a university lecturer is that you get to talk about a subject that you’re passionate about. It allows you to focus your skills in one key area, turning your interest into a successful teaching career, where you get to impart knowledge to others.

Not only do you get to share your passions with people who have similar interests and goals as you, but you’ll be encouraging them to grow, develop and further their passions through study.

This makes teaching in higher education extremely rewarding, and often without the same challenges that you find in schools. Serious disciplinary problems are rare at this level, and most students are fully engaged in their chosen course.

You’ll be shaping the next generation

Every teaching job plays a big role in shaping students while preparing them for the workplace, but at university level it’s much more than that.

Teachers in higher education are there to develop a student’s way of thinking, as well as their approach in their field of study and practice. This means you’ll have a direct impact on how they act, how they work, and how they interact with others at work.

This is all done through personal and professional development, placing you at the centre of their career evolution. You’ll be a teacher, a mentor, a career advisor, and someone who influences your student’s success and other areas in their life.

You’ll find your job to be highly interactive

Teaching in higher education means being in front of an engaged audience, people who have opted to study your class, and people who have specific career goals. This makes your job easier when it comes to capturing interest and keeping people focused on what you have to say.

You will also benefit from a more relaxed teaching environment compared to schools, and have the chance to enjoy genuine interactions with students. For teachers who prefer to take friendly approach to education, higher education jobs could be much more suited to you.

They may challenge your beliefs

With more scope for open discussions, opinion-sharing and collaborative teaching/learning methods, higher education jobs will make you more exposed as a leader. This means you cannot simply hide behind a lesson plan; you’ll need to think outside the box, have an open mind, and use a range of approaches.

This is certainly not a bad thing, and it allows for students to be open. It also allows for healthy debate, and students may challenge ideas or the status quo, bringing new concepts to the table.

There’s more autonomy

Higher education jobs usually offer a lot more autonomy and flexibility, so many teachers can enjoy a much better work/life balance. Furthermore, because working hours are less traditional than the nine to five role, you’ll be able to juggle work with family commitments.

Unlike schools, teaching in higher education promises independent working too, giving you more freedom to take classes in the direction you want. Research tells us that teachers with more autonomy are happier, and therefore get to enjoy more job satisfaction.
