Game art design allows you to turn imagination and ideas into epic characters, and artists often enjoy amazing job satisfaction. But how hard is it to get your foot in the door of this industry?
The degree at the University of Bolton forms the foundation to a successful career in the gaming industry. Not only do you get to study in our £13 million facility (in the Centre for Games Development), but you’ll gain experience through a range of interdisciplinary projects.
We have passionate lecturers to help you with personal and professional development, while our dedicated Employability Team support you throughout your studies. Plus, here are some tips on how to get a career in video games once you graduate!
In order to be successful as a games art designer, you need to have a real passion for gaming, and all things related to it. Completely immersing yourself in the gaming culture is important, because it puts you in touch with what the end user wants.
It also gives you raw insight into the psyche of players, and a view of how the industry is evolving. Besides, it certainly helps to love what you do. So if you’re an avid gamer, and you’re also super creative, this profession could be for you.
As this industry can be tough to break into, it pays to have both classroom-based and structured learning with real job training.
Focusing on a good education should be the first step, but always be on the lookout for work experience opportunities with gaming companies. If you want to know how to get a job in the gaming industry in the uk, get your name out there and build that portfolio of yours with every chance you get!
When it comes to gaming careers, be a “yes” man. Because turning down opportunities could mean losing out on valuable experience and training, or even a job. We try to instil this into our students, and actually work in partnership with games development companies to give you hands-on learning.
For instance, you can get involved in usability testing, meaning you can play and try games before they go to market. And previous students have even had their names mentioned in the game credits.
Any chance to make connections is key, and that’s how to get a career in video games. It’s all about those small steps to get your foot on the ladder.
We think that networking is a must. Not only do we provide opportunities for you to build a good rapport with your peers, such as lecturers and students, but we also help you make real connections with gaming companies.
Our impressive partnerships include affiliations with the likes of Rockstar Games, Codemasters, Travellers’ Tales and Cloud Imperium Games. This places us at the forefront of video game designing and development, and allows students to grow their professional network as well as their portfolios.
If you want to know how to get a career in video games, perseverance is also a must. The competition can be fierce, but as one the fastest growing industries, there will always be new work opportunities on the horizon.
