How to gain legal experience while studying law

Many law students are wondering how they can gain additional experience during their studies. After all, practical experience is essential in the legal field. Fortunately, there are several ways to get your foot in the door and start gaining the skills and experience you need to build a successful career in law. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Volunteer with a legal aid organisation

If you want to gain some hands-on experience working with clients, consider volunteering with a legal aid organisation. These organisations provide free or low-cost legal services to those who cannot afford them. As a volunteer, you may have the opportunity to work on cases, conduct client interviews, or do research. This is an excellent way to get some real-world experience while helping those in need.

Studying law at the University of Bolton, we help our students stand out by giving them access to our very own Legal Advice Centre. Providing a study space run by our students and supported by professional legal practitioners, giving students the chance to provide free legal advice to members of the public. Thereby, drawing on their practical experience that they will benefit from when entering the industry.

Participate in Moot court competitions

Moot court competitions are another great way to gain practical experience and improve your advocacy skills. In these competitions, teams of law students argue hypothetical cases before panels of judges. This is an excellent way to get some practice arguing cases and receive feedback from experienced attorneys. At Bolton University, we are one of only a few UK universities that has invested in our own Moot court. Providing our students with the opportunity to study in a supportive learning environment that gives them the practical learning experience.

Get a job in a law firm

One of the best ways to gain legal experience is to work part-time in a law firm. You can start as a receptionist, runner, or file clerk and work your way up. This will give you an inside look at how a law firm operates and will allow you to see first-hand how lawyers work on cases. You may even have the opportunity to sit in on meetings or court proceedings.

Law students mock negotiationJoin a mock trial team

A mock trial is an extra-curricular activity that simulates a real trial and is often offered through law schools or local bar associations. As a member of a mock trial team, you will have the opportunity to play the role of attorney or witness and hone your advocacy skills. This is an excellent way to gain practical experience and learn how to think on your feet.

By becoming a member of our Bolton School of Law, you will be joining a course that has been voted first in the UK for Student Satisfaction*.
