People with skills in IT security are highly sought after, not just in one industry, but in every sector, and in businesses and organisations of every shape and size.

As a cyber security graduate, you’ll be in hot demand, making cyber security jobs some of the best professions to work towards when studying at degree level. Here’s why every employer wants to add you to the payroll right now!

Security matters more than ever

As businesses adopt more devices and allow more workers to work remotely through the cloud, security will be a growing issue. Through digital transformation, organisations are actually widening their attack surface, creating more entry points for potential cybercrime.

There has never been a bigger need for security experts, with the right skills and knowledge to keep corporate data safe. So this is a great time to study, with great prospects when you graduate!

There’s a huge skills gap

The need for security is growing, but the skills pool isn’t. In fact, there’s a massive skills gap that must be filled, with over four million professionals needed worldwide to close it.

With more jobs than there are qualified people to fill them, it’s no wonder cyber security graduates are so popular. This means students will have a high employability rate when they leave university, and will likely be able to pick from multiple job offers.

Everyone wants better security (including customers)

Businesses care about security because the risks are too high to bear. Plus, they also have to consider their stakeholders, and this includes their customers. More and more customers are now digital natives, making them extremely savvy about their web security.

In order to stay competitive, brands in every sector, from retail to Business-to-Business (B2B) must get their security features right.

The cost of a breach is high

According to IBM, the average cost of a data breach is £2.73 million, with industries such as healthcare being affected the most in terms of cost. What’s even scarier for organisations is the time is takes for problems to be spotted and resolved.

The average time to identify and contain a breach is 280 days. That’s over 9 months, with a lot of wasted resources.

If customer information is leaked, it can be detrimental to a company’s reputation, and that could see that business failing and never being able to trade again. So the need for cyber security graduates is about survival, particularly in a time when cyber threats are increasing from every angle.

This makes cyber security jobs are some of the easiest jobs to get, as long as you have the right skills, qualifications and personality traits.

Soft skills are important too, as a successful security professional must be able to work effectively with others and build a good security framework spanning multiple departments.
